Adobe Photoshop CS Memory Bug - in Windows AND OS X

Adobe Photoshop CS Memory Bug - in Windows AND OS X

2004-02-16 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

Ok, once again, here I go providing negative news on a beloved graphics
icon, I'm sure it will endear me in the hearts of many (NOT).. But,
I'll report it anyway.

There are reports of apparently documentable memory problems on BOTH
the Windows and Mac OS X sides (I've seen them on my Windoze machine
too).. Sounds like CS has an inborn memory management problems.

See the following threads at the Adobe's own Forums (of course, "fora"
was the original proper pluralization of "forum") :

"PS CS and serious memory problems under OS X (Panther)"
http://tinyurl.com/ywxjo

"CS Memory Leak"
http://tinyurl.com/2floe

"PS CS eventual slow down"
http://tinyurl.com/2ja3a

"CS Memory Hog Test (vs. ver 7)"
http://tinyurl.com/2sxc2

"CS Problems"
http://tinyurl.com/27gb8

And one at DP Review:
http://tinyurl.com/2m8tf

Of course, in each thread over at Adobeland it seems that people
responding initially deny it's an issue, but then after users exhaust
all the suggestions, they admit that Adobe IS researching a problem
along these lines.

That's what happens when you use proprietary memory management (in
effect a mini self-contained OS) and don't test it on enough hardware
and/or real OSes before you release the full version upgrade.. That's
also why other applications generally leave memory management to the
OSes. Fighting with modern OSes to control the memory is bound to result
in problems sometimes. Especially since BETA testing today goes out to
smaller subsets of the user community (as a % of installed users than it
did in the past).

Welcome to the land of M$ style BETA Testing, where Version 1.0 is the
final Release Candidate / BETA, and initial adopters take the hit.

I've noted some rather sluggardly behavior also; related to a memory
leak? I don't know. What I'm getting is an absolute refusal by CS to
use more than 4GB of scratch disk. I've given it as much as 12GB,
and every time I get the 'scratch disks full' notice, when I check
the swap disc it's always under 4GB.I hope they fix it soon!

Man, I quit the Epson group because of OT threads like this that tend
to go on and on....

I know it can be seen to relate to this group as many of us use PS but
it's WAY more on-topic at a PS group than here.

Richard, it seems demonstrably (see below) and patently apparent you
have a personal axe to grind. I'd firstly suggest taking your commentary
along those lines up with me offlist if you wish..

I'd also recommend the proverb about "he who is without sin" casting the
first stone, since it seems you ONLY complain when they are my posts...
In fact, here's a few OffTopic posts you not only didn't complain about
but felt compelled to contribute to:

That is a good one. Someone last week commented when seeing my
Rolleiflex around my neck, "Wow, I'll be that takes good pictures!" I
said, "Yes, it can. If I don't muck it up!". Then his wife said, "Is
it a digital?" and I replied, "Well, no, it's from 1953." In which
she sort of looked at me like I was nuts. I think she thought I was
being sarcastic.

I tried it for my LS-4000 since I had seen some report better results.
Overall I saw little difference and for slides actually had some
problems with some getting a weird hazy look (another reported a
similar problem too). Either way I still get much better and
consistent results with Vuescan and so I stick with that.

I would agree fully Alan. But I truly think in this case the doing it
yourself vs. Photokit is not that much of a productivity and
time-saver, especially if you look at from the more control one has on
an image-by-image basis, especially in part 2.

That said, if PK cost $35 I would buy it. But $99 for a few actions?
No way. And even if one would want it because they feel they lack the
PS skill to do it themselves the 30-60 minutes or so to learn and
practice the layers and methods laid out by Mitch would be time and
effort VERY well invested in applying these tools in other situations
and for other reasons in your continued photographic workflows later

I'd go on Richard, but I think these examples suffice. Each of your

complaining about YOUR arguably off-topic opines.. You do understand the

If people here want to discuss it in ultra detail, they are welcome
to. And I'll decide whether to hang around or not based on that.

No policing. Just adding my opinion.

No offense meant.

OT- it seems everything on this list is OT, unless it is about a few members
list of approved topics...it is almost impossible to not involve hardware
and software when we talk about digital regardless of the shade, that is
what drives this process.
Most people here uses Photoshop, they use Epson printers connected to a Mac
and/or PC running OS X and/or win XP, so everything in that sentence is
related to Digital BLACK and WHITE printing!

Are we not here to exchange ideas and help eachother out (says the lurker

IMHO the CS memory problem is a good topic for any board frequented by PSCS
users. On another board, discovered a thread on Adobe's board and eventually
found this link to a
http://www.tweaknow.com/ramidleLE.html to Ram Idle which seems to help. I
also put the scratch disk on additional drives I have. By doing both, PSCS
comes close, but doesn't quite scream.
Kindest regards,
Joe
PS: Hope this helps someone weeping, wailing and gnashing their teeth at
memory problems.

Each of your
posts had more relevant places they could be posted: a Rollei group, a
film group, a PS group, or a scanner group - and you didn't see others
complaining about YOUR arguably off-topic opines.. You do understand the
  word "equanimity", don't you?

I didn't want to be the first to say it but I second the above entirely. I made the effort
to hang on to this list despite the fact that the vast majority of posts are nothing
more then endless lamentations (and no, I don't want explanations as to the
contrary), just for the very few who are relevant to the stated mission of the list.
I guess that's the price to pay...

Like what? I have made not a single post to this list since the 16th...
That's now 5 days. It's not my fault if you're unable to keep up. So
please don't accuse me of clogging up the list. No-one is forcing you
to read my posts. (even in the digest version I assume you can scroll
forward whenever you see my name)

Tom, I really suggest you catch up on the news BEFORE you go painting my
posting as vindictive. Talk to Jon Cone about it even. You're making
yourself look woefully out of touch.

and btw, if you want to make further personal attacks on me, I'd suggest
YOU need to take it offlist. None of my posts have been personal
attacks. You on the other hand, in implying they are, have ventured
into personal attack upon me. If you or anyone else engages in personal
attack, I shall respond. However, I won't descend into such attack myself.

Sorry.. If you want "happy talk" you can go elsewhere or simply skip my
posts entirely. No-one has any responsibility to post only GOOD news
about products and/or companies in the biz, and I'm not about to stop
reporting either the good or the bad.. When products don't perform as
promised, or companies mess-up that's just as noteworthy as good
products or new breakthroughs.. AND if Martin or Antonis have a problem
with my posts (remember them? they ARE the moderators) they will make me
immediately aware of it, I'm sure.. just as they have in the past.

Tell you what.. then take your own shots offlist, if you want the
response offlist.. Don't make them onlist and say email me offlist.. YOU
AREN'T the moderator.
