histogram question

histogram question

2004-02-27 by lea

I've read where it's a good idea to check the histogram after a shot to
make sure you don't blow the highlights. My question is, what adjustment
do I make if I did blow them? Close down the f/stop seems the logical
choice but that then darkens everything. Am I missing something?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Lea

Perfect. I figured it had to be something like that but I just wasn't
sure.

Thanks for the help,
Lea

That's how you avoid clipping highlights--you make the exposure darker.
Then, if you want the picture brighter, you can apply a curve when you
edit,
to bring up the midtones while compressing rather than clipping the
highlights.

Hello Lea,

>check the histogram after a shot to make sure you don't blow
>the highlights...what adjustment do I make if I did blow them?

Lessen the exposure with the "exposure compensation" control. Most
cameras allow 1/3 stop increments, up to +/- 2 stops. On my camera,
if it's on aperture priority it will change the shutter speed, and if
it's on shutter priority it will change the aperture. If it's on
Program it could do either or both.

BTW, this is an Off Topic subject for this forum, but as long as this
thread doesn't get strung out real long the occasional OT question is
ok. Got any questions about BW printing? <g>

Regards,
Clayton
