Does anyone use Studio Print with the Ultrachome inks and produce good neutral or warm etc. toned BW prints? I am thinking particularly of the 7600 for this. This would be as an alternative to the Imageprint RIP. I've been working on some ideas for this, should get results very similar to IP. But I won't have my hands on a 7600 w/ Ultrachromes for a few weeks for verification. It's all in my head right now. Thanks Tyler, I have to make my decision in the next couple of weeks, so really need to hear from someone who has been (un)successful with this combination, if possible. Ellie, I have done some test with 9600 and it looks like it will be able to do it. What I did was to print a density strip to linearize and read it with EyeOne, then I cut of the Yellow inks limit to zero and limit the Cyan and Magenta to very low densities. With this I got a cold tone print almost like sepia toned print. I asked photographer friends what they thought and they agreed with me about the tone. I will do some more test using the Yellow inks and turn down the density on Cyan and se if I can get a warmer tone as well. But if I compare to UT2 inks they are still the best. But I need a loupe to see the colours (CM) in 8x10 print from StudioPrint;) Regards Soren > Does anyone use Studio Print with the Ultrachome inks and produce good > neutral or warm etc. toned BW prints? Hi Ellie, I've been using posterprint (same thing mostly as studioprint) with my 9600 and ultrachrome inks for 16 months now. I do neutral cool and warm, and all sorts of stuff in between. I have a client that I was outputting his images using piezotones on a 7000 before that. Because of banding issues, I dumped the quad 7000 and print all his images on my 9600. He nor his collectors can tell the difference. I have received some prints yesterday that were supposed to show me what the BW images printed on the 7600 using UC inks and Imageprint were capable of. They were printed using the 2200 with Imageprint, the photo/matte black ink in a Lyson inkset and on Epson AM paper, where we are planning on using Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. I understand that this will not give me a very good idea and today they are sending more at least with the matte black and Epson inks, but same printer and paper. But I was quite disappointed in the prints. They were very grey where the shadow areas in the prints I had before from our Colorspan using 4 Blacks were rich and velvety black (same files). Am I to expect that the results I will get will be not a very deep black? I have a sample print that Cone Editions sent out (not my file) and the print was lovely with rich tones in the shadows. Can I expect the same with Imageprint, and the UC inks? I am nervous to invest more money and find that I am disappointed again. Ellie; The 7600 with ImagePrint is a good solution for a printer that does BW and Color and gives good results for both. Printing on Luster or Glossy paper with the Photo-Black ink (and a top coat spray to eliminate bronzing) is a great workflow with this printer (deepest black.) However, in my opinion, printers that are converted to use only grayscale inks still produce a better grayscale prints. To that end, either the latest Cone inks or the MIS grayscale inks are great with ImagePrint. I use MIS ink. Wendel

Ellie, I have been in the process over the last few weeks of evaluating the various options available for printing B/W on a 2200. I have just checked the Colorbyte web site and there is no "grey" profile available for the Lyson inks. So I am not surprised that you are dissapointed. The way these prints, I assume, were profiled was to use the RGB profile that is available. On Imageprint this gives you access to the "Black Point" slider which can be used to "open up" the shadows. Maybe if this was reduced you might well get the denser shadows that you require. I personally would try to replace the mk ink with MIS Eboini. It gives a great DMax and seems to be pretty compatible with other pigment inks. I have not had a great deal of success with IP and B/W using RGB profiles. I guess that's why they went to the effort of producing B/W profiles. If you were to try Ultrachromes on the paper of your choice I,m sure you would be very happy. Currently my prefered B/W is the "Black Only" approach. Lovely blacks and good tone. I personally have more or less given up on the IP demo and my old Jon Cone plugin for this simple approach. I just contacted this person who did the prints for me, and he said that he used the Lyson grey profile they had made for the enhanced matte paper. Strange that they made a profile for him, but have not made it generally available. But I'm surprised that the prints looked as dull as they did. Undoubtedly due to the Lyson combo/Photo Black. I'm still hoping to see some output from the right printer, right inks, and the grey profile.
