Before deciding to give QuadTone RIP 2.0 a run...questions

Before deciding to give QuadTone RIP 2.0 a run...questions

2004-03-09 by chipcarterdc

I'm running Mac OS 10.3. IF (and it's a big if) I understand the QTR
instructions correctly, I must download and install something called "Gimp-
Print" before installing QTR. But wasn't it a conflict w. Gimp-Print (preinstalled
on 10.3) and the Epson drivers that was causing all the headaches w. Epson
printers a few months ago? (I currently have a 2200 and will be getting a
9600). I seem to recall that in order to get a 2200 (7600/9600) to work w.
10.3, you had to uninstall 10.3; reinstall it WITHOUT the Gimp thing (and
perhaps w/out the Epson printer drivers included w. 10.3?); then download
the Epson printer driver separately and reinstall it.

The short question is: am I about to "break" my system by installing Gimp-Print
in order to install QTR 2.0?

Mac OS X 10.3 does have a lot of potential print drivers and that can
cause some confusion. QTR, however, is self contained and should be
easy to use along side of the other drivers. QTR uses code from gimp-print
but not the pre-installed or a separately downloaded version. With QTR
you just download the QTR package and install the QuadToneRIP2.0.pkg,
do NOT download any separate gimp-print code. It makes no difference
if you have the pre-loaded version or not. This package contains all the
code needed.

You should also download the 2200-UC profiles from my website. There
is an Install2200 script in the downloaded folder. With the printer on
and connected via USB, just double-click on the Install2200 script. This
will setup a Quad2200 printer with all the curves ready to go.

For color printing you should continue to use the Epson supplied driver --
probably named "Stylus Photo 2200" or SP2200. If you have any doubt
whether you have the correct one -- in Print Setup, select the printer,
run Show Info, look at Printer Model and it should say "EPSON Stylus Photo 2200"
not something with Gimp-Print or QuadToneRIP. Finally if you need to
Add the Epson driver use Add Printer>EPSON USB

If you do have any difficulty, let me know.

Yes, GIMP is a major conflict with Epson drivers, at least in some cases. I
know one where
an Epson rep was driven to formating a customers drive to get rid of them.
There is a
GIMP uninstaller on the web that worked for me, but I hear that it does not work
in all
cases, golly knows why.

Also if you do want to go ahead with GIMP, they are on the 10.3 CD's, #3 I think? and you
can just install them without reinstalling the OS. You might even already have them by
accident from the original install. I did.

Yes, including all the OLD gimp-print drivers with 10.3 was a
mistake in my opinion. But they really aren't all that tough to remove.

Thanks for the response. Just to be clear: I should (a) download and install
the QuadTineRIP2.0 program, then (b) download and install the Install2200
script in order to get the 2200 profiles?

If that's correct, then i have another question: if I want to use QTR w. the 9600,
is it the same procedure? Or do I download different curves for the 9600 and
if so, where do I get those from?

Thanks!

"With QTR you just download the QTR package and install the
QuadToneRIP2.0.pkg, do NOT download any separate gimp-print code. It
makes no difference if you have the pre-loaded version or not. This package
contains all the
code needed.

You should also download the 2200-UC profiles from my website. There
is an Install2200 script in the downloaded folder. With the printer on
and connected via USB, just double-click on the Install2200 script. This
will setup a Quad2200 printer with all the curves ready to go."

Yes, that's correct. The Install2200 is in the download called 2200-UC.

At the moment I have some curves for Enhanced Matte with Matte Black ink.
But they aren't on the website yet.
