Fragile Hahnemule prints

2004-03-19 by Ellie Kennard

I have done some beautiful prints on Hahnemuhle Photorag with my 7600
UC with Image Print. I am concerned by how very fragile the surface
is. The blacks go shiny with the slightest touch. Not that I would
normally touch them, but these things happen.

How do people protect their prints? I tried some Krylon spray but
that doesn't look good.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ellie

Printguard from Lyson is supposed to be the one. I think there are
problems with the Krylon. Bulldog and Lyson are actually the same,
according to my lawyer, Big Al Babalugats.

Ellie,

one option is bagging them:

http://clearbags.com/

the other is neutral glassine:

OnlineShopping?ACTN=80000&keyword=glassine&x=0&y=0

or tissue:

I assume you also dust the surface before printing....

I use PremierArt Print Shield or Lyson Print Guard to protect papers.

However, while PhotoRag wins the beauty contest when it's in perfect shape,
I don't want to mess with the problems. So, I also use Epson UltraSmooth
(aka Scrapbook & PremierArt Fine Art Hot Press) to start with. I'm not sure
the sprays are going to deal with the discoloration problems of Hahnemuhle
that are too frequently reported, and I prefer an un-brightened paper to
avoid the paper "yellowing" with long term light exposure.

Thanks Paul,

I have been using the HPR for about 6 months and had not noticed any
problems with it. I was not using UC inks, of course, as we have just got
the 7600's. I will keep my eye out for any problems with it.

Is it only the Photo Rag that is supposed to be having problems? We have
been using the Colorspan Fineart Permacolor Paper for over two years
(apparently the same as the H. German Etching Board) and have had no
problems whatsoever with it discolouring etc. Different paper, being
cellulose, not Rag, of course.

Thanks,

Ellie

Yellowing is the coating's sensitivity to certain chemicals. This is
not confined to H papers, I've seen it on Somerset Enhanced and some
Epson papers over the years. German Etching is as likely to yellow as
any other, I've seen it here.
Unless tests are done with whatever papers you want to try, there's no
reason to believe avoiding H papers, or switching to something else
will keep the yellows away.
Avoiding OBAs is no real solution to this particular problem either.
Handling, packing, even where the prints sit around or are stored
needs to be carefully considered with all these papers.

Thanks James.

I have some Bulldog, so will give it a try. When I tried it on my
Colorspan prints on watercolour papers, it drew the silica up from the
paper and gave a filmy, powdery look to the print. Krylon worked for
those, though was not much protection. Helped a little bit with water
resistance.

All the best

Hi Antonis,

I do bag them using clearbags products. The surface is much more fragile
than I have been used to. For example I cannot trim them on my Rotatrim as
the plastic grip will mark the surface. This is something new to me. I
wondered if it is because of the media.

I was just concerned for the accidental touch with a finger that would
ruin the darkest area of a print - whether during matting and framing, or
trimming. The print is not flaking off on its own.

Regards,

Ellie

On ColorSpan system, I have had very good experience with ClearStar ClearJet
FA (Fine Arts). This after trying almost everything else. J Vee
