I was taken by the "snapshots" myself. It is a welcome relief from the pictures of hummingbirds, fish (no matter how caught), and other drivel (Point Lobos and Yosemite are a bit tired). BTW, I have lived in the third world, with the people, sharing their tenacious hold on life--fishing for food--fishing for tomorrow.

I agree, the work on the site to me is not much more than snapshots
from a third world country. Most here in the USA simply have never
seen these kind of conditions for themselves and consider it "ART"
when seen in this form. All who think that it is art should buy a
ticket and visit there. Try India, or Angolia or the slums of South
America. It makes you appreciate living as we do, it's still not Art
  though.

Right, and whether it is art isn't a very important question
either. However that " is it art ?" even " is it fine art ?"
question is not reserved for Point Lobos landscapes either. To
throw in a heavyweight; HCB showed compassion as well and it
wasn't just for the pretty picture. The same for Bruce Davidson
and that was done in the US. Wonder what the verdict would be on
the " the steerage" if it was made today in a third world country.

There's a link on www.dpreview.com to an interesting article how
Sports Illustrated covers the Super Bowl these days with digital
cameras. It is impressive in its organisation and speed. 16.000
takes judged and 80 selected for further judgment.
12 photographers. Like " give 1000 chimps a typewriter ... ".
That's really at the other end of the spectrum. One would think
that one of the photographers mentioned in the thread could
achieve more single handed.

Call it " good photography " and it may be your taste or not but
" snapshots " and " underdeveloped countries " have nothing to do
with it.

Sorry Clayton, you can't have it both ways; by bringing something to others' attention invites discussion. Please don't feel that since some disagreed with your appreciation, the discussion is a debate. Folks just discussing......

Actually Adams did document the poor lives of others. In case some aren't familiar with it the Library of Congress has scans of some great photographs. Here is an URL for the Ansel Adams photos of Manzanar Relocation center http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/aamhtml/aamhome.html

I am also fond of some hi res tiffs of Walker Evans depression era work and intend to try printing some soon.

  Clayton,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you not start this thread? It does
not have a lot to do with the forum and is definately off topic.
You and others consider it "Art" while I and maybe some others who
are to nervous to post here because ot the "Flame", do not.
Well exposed, sharp and details in the shadows, yes, art, no. It is
Photo Journalism. Do you consider the pics of our brave men shown on
the front cover of the New York Times every day art? I think that
this type of pic is disgusting and shows no thought for the relatives
  of the persons concerned.
The site you refer to just shows the poor lives of others, it's
journalism and not art. To even mention and compare this to Ansel is
  just bad form.

I've managed to find at least a dozen or so hires ones (+some by other
photographers - there is a great set of pano's of 1920's bathing beauty
contests all hires!)

The Evans print up nicely - I have several on my walls 11x14 or so
