problems building quadtone rip on Linux; CUPS library

2004-04-18 by myriad_one

All,

I have been attempting to install Roy Harrington's QuadTone RIP
software on Redhat Linux, and I need your help! I think I have
everything right expect that CUPS doesn't seem to be installed
correctly and so quadtone RIP won't build.

I have followed the instructions in QTR-LinuxNotes.pdf. I have
downloaded and installed webmin, quad.convs per instructions. My
Redhat installation (9.0) seems to have CUPS installed as I was able
to do a test print on my Epson 2200 and the test page said it was
using CUPS 1.1.x.

I have gotten to the point of running the make script (install-
quadtonerip). The script compiled all the modules but had shell
errors with cups-config:
"/bin/sh: line 1: cups-config: command not found"
Make still continued but failed when the linker tried to pull in the
cups library:
"/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcups"

This seems like I do not have the development version of CUPS
installed, even if I can print OK. So I downloaded cups-devel-
1.1.20-1.i386.rpm and installed it using rpm. That looked like it
worked though it gave a warning that some files conflicted with the
earlier installed version of CUPS files.

I then re-ran the install-quadtonerip script (after doing a make
clean on both src directories). Still no dice, same errors. I did
a find for "libcups.a" as well as "cups-config" and neither could be
found. (though I do have the shared lib libcups.so.2). I also did a
locate cups-conf and it does not find the file in /usr/bin as it is
supposed to be.

I'm out of ideas but I think I'm pretty close to getting this
built. Help please!

Thanks

Sounds to me that you don't have the C compiler installed. When you install
QTR you are actually programming the machine and it need the C compiler to
do so. Go to your installation media or to a mirror site and install the C
compiler. You will also need to install the cups-devel package so that
cups-config is available.

Once you get those two steps done QTR should install.

Hi North,

It sounds like you've got two issues.

The first is missing cups-config. This is a shell script that just echos
the directories of where to find various cups pieces. As you mentioned
maybe you have a stripped down cups version. Possibly redhat.com
has downloads that would have this. The script is very simple and if
you can't get a redhat version I can help make a new one.

The second is missing libcups.a. As you probably know this is a library for
some of the cups routines. Dynamic libraries vary system to system
so I don't know why the shared version isn't being used.

Roy

Re: problems building quadtone rip on Linux; CUPS library, Roy please help

2004-04-21 by myriad_one

Roy and others,

Thanks-- yes it was a bad cups-devel.rpm file. I downloaded a new
one from Redhat and got QuadToneRIP to build just fine. Yeah!

Now I need help with installing the curves though. I want to use
Epson Premium Luster paper with Ultrachrome inks for my printing. I
looked in both the sampleInks and Profiles directories of
QuadToneRIP, but didn't see any ink curves for Epson Premium
Luster. I saw curves for Enhanced Matt and some other papers.

Where can I get the curves for Premium Luster--UC inks and how do I
install them? I downloaded the Epson UC2200.SIT file from Roy's
site, but I have no idea what to do with a .SIT file or if it
contains curves for Premium Luster. Perhaps there is some doc on
this I didn't see?

Just to see if I could do a print, I installed the already-provided
curves for Enhanced Matte. But when I ran qtcups no curves showed
up in the dialog box (My QUAD2200 printer and QuadToneRIP choices do
show up OK). I selected Premium Luster paper in the dialog so
perhaps that is why no curves showed up?

Once I have the curves installed for Premium Luster, what settings
should I use in the qtcups dialog box for that paper type?

Thanks in advance for your help (anyone not just Roy!). I am so
close on getting this to work I can taste the ink :)

North,

I just made a set of QTR profiles yesterday for Inkjetart Microceramic
Luster with the 2200 UC inks (PK). This paper is essentially the same
as Epson's premium luster. I've sent the profiles to you to try - use
the Premium Luster media setting and 1440x720 HQ resolution setting.
Good dmax, but as usual significant bronzing with the UC inks on this
type paper.

sit is a mac compressed file. You can go to Alladin's website and download a
version of their decompressor (stuffit) for Linux.
