John Custodio - NY Show and Steve Meyers & Tyler Boley in Seattle

John Custodio - NY Show and Steve Meyers & Tyler Boley in Seattle

I'll be in New York next week (from Seattle), but it looks like the
Gallery where John's show is won't be open when I'm there (Sun night
thru Weds). After seeing his post, I thought it was perfect timing
for my trip until I got to the gallery hours. Hope others on the list
can make it. Any suggestions for galleries in NYC that are open on
Monday or Tuesday evenings would be appreciated

For those of you who are in the Seattle area, there are two great
digital print viewing opportunities right now.

First, if you haven't been to the Benham Gallery for the current
three-photographer show (including Steven Meyers work), the show ends
May 8th, so now's the time. Great examples of both BW and color
digital work. It would be a great way to start a First Thursday (for
non-Seattlites, Seattle galleries hold a monthly evening open-house on
the first Thursday of each month). Benham Gallery is at 1216 First
Ave in Seattle (206 622-2480).

Second--and this one is a must see--is Tyler Boley's informal show in
Issaquah. I emailed Tyler off list for information on how to go see
his work. I'm just starting my digital BW printing efforts (after a
fairly long history with silver) and wanted to see some examples of
(hopefully) high quality BW digital printing.

I found Tyler's photography simply stunning and the technical
perfection of his printing was off the charts. If you are in the
Seattle area, you shouldn't miss the chance to see this work.

Tyler's display is at University House (a very classy retirement
home--Tyler's prints are right at home next to the Chihuly glass),
22975 S.E. Black Nugget Road, Issaquah. More info at:
http://www.eracare.com/sites/uhissaquah.asp

You will have to stop at the desk and tell them you are there
to see the art. Prints of Italy are straight ahead, there more in a
lounge area to the right, a few more in a hallway to the left. In that
same hallway is a door into a small auditorium, in there are many
landscapes. Upstairs there are more in the lounge area. There's
enough work hanging to make the trip to Issaquah well worth your
while.

(I'm going to cross-post this to the other lists)

I just wanted to make a few quick comments before Steve's show comes
down, if it hasn't already.
Steve has managed to exhibit quad tone inkjet prints for some time
now, and may have been one of the first people in the country to have
them widely accepted. His work is very unique, and is a marriage
between content and print quality, careful paper choice, ink tint,
etc.. In other words, he picked the appropriate process to enhance the
imagery. Digital wasn't selected for the sake of convenience. The
monitor doesn't begin to do his work justice as his print quality
does, but-

Ken Smith, in the same show, hasn't been mentioned much, and deserves
to be. He makes beautiful still lives and again unusual print process
is part of what brings it alive.
Muted color with pigment inks on uncoated stock, and also unorthodox
use of MIS quad inks, also on uncoated stock, makes for a totally
valid and gorgeous print when combined with his imagery.
Interestingly, I suspect some on this list would consider his
workflows as marginal, yet could not produce a piece of work as
beautiful. He also has exhibited widely-

I guess what struck me is that both of these guys are a departure from
the norm one way or another, and the reason their techniques are
effective is that they come to printmaking from the standpoint of a
creative artist, not a technician.
So, go see this stuff, break out of these numbers and get inspired.

Tyler and Clayton,
Thank you both so much for enjoying my work. It was great to finally
meet you Tyler at the opening reception of my show in Seattle. I'm
always interested in reading your insightful comments about this
printing process; and I use your ImageTrak software consistently,
Clayton. The talents expressed in this forum is greatly appreciated,
and highly prized.

best wishes,
Ken Smith

Hello Ken,

Nice to hear from you. I hadn't been to your web site in a long time,
then Tyler mentioned it and I saw lots of new work - very nice. I
have dabbled at still life over the years, with a few successes, and
always enjoyed it. I never did a sustained focus on it though, but
sometimes the fire strikes. Seeing your work has inspired me and
today I worked with some nice Bosc pears I got at the market. Ended
up
with at least one keeper.

I'm planning to do some work on I-Trak soon. I still have your notes
about an address block. If you have any other ideas please send them
along. I'll be in contact for some beta testing.

Regards,
Clayton
