At the moment I am using Epson Enhanced Matte for compositional proofs since it is cheap. But I am really still at the "post install" stage. Yesterday after flawless setup and run, I found a driver glitch that distracted me for quite a while. For 'real prints' I expect to use Ultrasmooth or something like that. Scott

Hi Scott, >>> So why mess with another ink? For BO printing everything I've read says Ultrachrome matte black is quite warm in tone. I take it you don't mind this warmness? Also, for 7 ink B&W prints, profiles make a big difference by eliminating the blue and magneta color casts -- I saw before and after 4000 prints. My local shoop qouted Gretag print profiles 5 for $200. Not outrageous in my opinon. These are 2 easy methods in my opinion to get really good B&W... It is warm, and I don't like it. That is why I don't use BO. And I have suffered enough clogs with "foreign" inks. Besides I won't switch unless forced to. Too much hassle. Been there. You might not need custom profiles with the 4000 though. Bug me in a couple of days and I might know. Hi you all I have three questions? 1) what is BO? 2) I am thinking about using the UT7 inkset with 2200, how do I profile my papers? Now I use colorvision products for color but how about B&W prints? 3) any experience with MIS CFS for the 2200, I am tired of paying for epson ink? _______________________________ TIA Regards, Mehrdad

Mehrdad, >1) what is BO? Printing B&W with just the black ink. It allows you to leave the color ink in the printer. Incredibly, Epson UltraChrome printers do not, however, use the light black in "black only" printing. The look of the print with only black ink is sometimes referred to as a "Tri X" (grainy) look. The black ink is warm, but the MIS Eboni is less warm than Epson Matte Black. There are some papers that print cold and some that print warm, so you do have some control over the hue of the image, but it is limited relative to one of the variable-tone inksets. >2) I am thinking about using the UT7 inkset with 2200, how do I >profile my papers? Now I use colorvision products for color but how about >B&W prints? I have just used the Photoshop curves to control the inks. They are open (& free) and can be manipulated by users. The pre-made curves cover some popular papers, and many papers are close to those already profiled. You'll be surprised at how similar especially matte papers are. We're not dealing with high-gamut color inks here. The UT2 & UT7 curves are also easier to manipulate than the older ones.
