Lyson Daylight Darkroom

2004-05-17 by photosimon2001

I saw the posts on here earlier mentioning the Lyson/Bowhaus team up
re a new set of lyson black and white inks - also this report on the
PDIA website
http://www.pdia.org/news/05_10_04news.asp

Does anyone have any further info on this? Nothing on the Lyson
website so am wondering how new these inks are and whether we can
hope for/expect reduced metamrerism compared with the quad blacks &
small gamuts

Hi Everyone,

I just joined the group, so I'm not sure if this has been discussed. Lyson
has introduced the Daylight Darkroom System for the Epson 2200/7600/9600
printers for making b&w prints. You can download an information sheet at
www.adventurecamphoto.com/lysondd.htm. Lyson is supposed to send me a
system to test, so I'm anxious to see the results.

Perhaps I have missed a previous post on this subject but would
anyone care to share their experience with the dye based inks, paper
and software that make up the new Lyson Daylight Darkroom product for
printing B&W on Epson printers? Any thoughts appreciated.

James,

There is some information about the Lyson Daylight Darkroom on my web site
at www.adventurecamphoto.com/lysondd.htm including a spec sheet. I am still
waiting for Lyson to send a unit to me for testing. When I have a chance to
try it out, I will post that information.

Do a search for Lyson Daylight Darkroom content on this site and on the yahoo epson
large format list and you will find a few observations from people who have tested them. I
believe the consensus is that that the inks work well on glossy media and look a lot like
gelatin silver output, but the metamerism makes them all but unusable for most of us.
They warm up significantly under tungsten illumination.

James
I don't think you missed anything yet. Lyson Daylight Darkroom as far
as I can see is a new product that has only just been launched. It
seems that Lyson have teamed up with Bowhaus who make the RIP, to
produce a complete one stop B&W solution. However I cannot see
anything really new here. The Bowhaus RIP IJC/OPM has been available
for a while. Its a RIP for B&W only and covers a number of popular
Epson printers, using any ink you care to choose. It will be
interesting to see how much Lyson charge for the software, compared
to buying it direct from Bowhaus. I have just bought IJC/OPM and
really like the product. I like the user interface of IJC, and OPM is
very simple to use. I'm just starting to experiment with building my
own curves to control the inks. IJC seems more of an intergrated
solution than QTR for this, and for me is easier to use. However I
wish Bowhaus would produce a decent tutorial on curve design.

Just my thoughts.

Lyson Daylight Darkroom

After reading about the Lyson product I went to their website
(http://www.daylightdarkroom.com/) and registered. Once you do that
they will send you a sample print using their product and you can
download the digital file to print on your system.

The sample print arrived a few days ago. I was surprised at how dark
the sample print was and how little detail there was in the shadow
areas. The Black-Only print I made on my 1280 from their file with
Eboni Ink looked much nicer to me.

Score another one for BO printing. :)
