Oct. 19, 2001 | SAN FRANCISCO (AP)
Software-maker Macromedia Inc. is claiming it owns the patent
to Adobe Systems Inc.'s popular Photoshop program, according
to a suit filed in federal court Friday. Macromedia, of San
Francisco, alleges that the technology behind San Jose-based
Adobe's Photoshop and GoLive programs was patented by
Macromedia in 1998. The programs are used for creating and
editing Web sites and other uses.

Can't make enough money in the market, try to make it in the courts? What could be patented by
Macromedia in '98, liquify? I wonder if anyone bought, or updated, Pshop because of that?
Anyone see anything else that's been added since '98 that might be the offending part? This
article can't be accurate: "claiming it owns the patent".

Mark,

If it is anything like all the lawsuits we see around here in Silicon
Valley it will circle through the courts for a few years, provide aid
for needy corporate lawyers and end in some out of court settlement.

I would not worry about the next version of Photoshop, at least not
on that account. Might actually stimulate the next version if they
need to replace the offending code.
