Monitors and Calibrations

2004-06-23 by borgida

Hello

I was wondering what many of you digital black and white print
photographers are using for a monitor and a calibration tool. In a
workshop I attended, the instructor mentioned getting a monitor withs
its own front-end calibrator (i.e., Lacie or Sony Artisan).

Well, the Artisan is way out of my budget and I am considering the
Lacie with the Blue Eye Vision calibrator. What are all of you using
as a monitor and what monitor calibration device are you using?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Ross

My understanding is that the Lacie monitors are made by NEC/Mitsubishi.
I've got a NEC monitor with the hardware calibrator - works fine. Less
money than the Lacie, at least 18 months ago it was.

I use and really like my ViewSonic P95f+ Professional Series monitor. I
use Pantone Colorvision Optical as my calibration tool. Both of these
items are fairly new (within the past 3 months) and I've been very
pleased with both.

The NEC with Spectravision (the calibration system) is the
FP2141SB-SV.
URL:

I bought a few of these monitors without the calibration and use the
Colorvision Spyder with them. I like the monitors a lot, but lust
for the Sony Artisan or maybe a Barco.

Not completely happy with the Spyder, BTW, and plan to upgrade to the
Eye One Photo to gain printer calibration as well.

Hello Ross,

I have a NEC 97F and use the Pantone Colorvision Spyder. Rather than
selecting any particular color temperature, I indicate that my
monitor does not have color temp options, and then use the
individual RGB guns to adjust. I have managed to get them to match
each other with .000 difference, but it took a lot of fiddling with
the adjustments. I am delighted with the results though. I do black
and white and was surprised how important that the color guns were
matching each other so there was no color cast anywhere in the image
on the monitor. I got the Spyder off eBay from a camera store that
had had a demonstration of them and Photoshop with digital cameras.
They resold them afte the classes and still made money and I got it
a little cheaper than from the retail stores.

Your friend in Photography,

Johnny Eades

Ross,
I'm using a LaCie Electron Blue display, calibrated
with a ColorVision spyder. I'm happy.

Monitors and Calibrations

2004-06-24 by Myron Wellan

I have the Lacie 21 w/Blue Eye - it has solved all my problems with
printing(along with IP 5.6) and works like a "champ". Best purchase I
have made in digital photography.

I have had the same problem and without the resources
to purchase one of the dedicated monitor calibration
devices or special monitors I had to find a different
way. I finally found out that my video card (NVIDIA
GeForce2 Ti) allowed individual RGB adjustments (shows
a graph similar to PS curves) as well as brightness,
contrast, and gamma. I selected a print with a wide
gamut and using that I adjusted my monitor to match
the print, so theoretically I should have a WYSIWYG
between my monitor (17" CTX) and my printer (Epson
1280) and I have been very pleased with the results so
far... YMMV
