UT2 - Photoshop /Picture Window Print Quality

UT2 - Photoshop /Picture Window Print Quality

2004-06-30 by islandbuck2

I am obtaining smooth gorgeous prints with UT2 Inks on 1280 with
Epson sliders out of Picture Window 3.5. As a mater of fact a
smoother tonal ramp than with the curves. However my output from
Photoshop 7.0 is awful no matter what. I don't really care I just
print from Picture Window. It's just kind of a mystery to me. All
my settings are right. Just kind of curious why the output would be
so different. My output from Photoshop with Paul's curves or the
sliders is totally blotchy large areas of the tonal ramp are totally
missing. Most obvious is 95-100. Gorgeous, smooth as silk out of
Picture Window. Very strange. Like to hear some opinions on this
one. I'm scratching my head. I have been a user of Photoshop for
over 10 years and Picture Window starting with version 3.0 for 2+
years.

Color Settings = Adobe Working Space, Gray Gamma 2.2

Print Preview = Color Management, Same as Source (Adobe)

I know it, makes no sense to me either. I even went to the extreme
of totally reformatting my system and reinstalling everything. Same
blotchy, posterized output from Photoshop 7 as before.

So, I have been Printing from Picture Window 3.5, using the sliders
in the Epson driver M -5 C +5 (Warm Neutral), Vivid, Gamma 1.8 (don't
understand this one either you would think 2.2) on EEM. I have spent
literally hundreds of dollars on ink and paper to arrive at this. I
am getting the finest prints I have ever gotten from an inkjet this
way.

I keep my proofs at 16 bit. I feel that some point I will be using
at 16 bit print driver/RIP. I wonder if this has anything to do with
it. Picture Window automatically converts to 8 bit before sending to
the driver. I know this happens in Photoshop some were down the line
while printing. I've converted to eight bit before printing in
Photoshop as well, same output. The digitally captured files I am
using are in reality 12 bit padded to 16. I wonder if this has
anything to do with it? I wonder if the 16 to 8 bit conversion
algorithm is different is some way in Picture Window. I need to ask
this one to Jonathan Sachs over at Digital Light and Color. I
wouldn't think so though. Well, at least I have an option that works
very well.

I wonder if there is some kind of incompatibility with the color
management engines. My raw converter C1 uses Windows color
management and so does Picture Window. Maybe this incompatibility is
exasperated by the 12 to 16 bit padding. No, come to think of it I
converted with Adobe CR as well and same thing. I don't know why I
worry about this I've solved this problem By printing from Picture
Window. Just very curious. Gremlins?

Do you print from the file in Grayscale or RGB?

For the curves to work properly you need to work in RGB.

Is the RGB in Adobe RGB 1998? Please check your color settings and make sure your RGB settings is Adobe RGB 1998.

Next...

Paper setting in Print Driver - Photo Paper, everything other setting
gives 'muddy' images.

If you are in 16bit the driver converts to 8bit so any fragmented
histograms you may have will be smoothed out.

How do step wedges print, any blocking of tones in any particular
area?

I remember getting pretty bad prints (posterization) with some images
using MAC OS 9 and Photoshop 7. When I switched to MAC OSX using
Photoshop 7 and now Photoshop CS those same image files printed A LOT
better.

[Digital BW] Re: UT2 - Photoshop /Picture Window Print Quality

2004-07-01 by jeffleeg8

On the Epson group I saw where using the slides has at time corrupted
the epson driver.

Also, what is your custom settings in the epson driver - make sure
you have "No Color Management" select. If you have ICC select in PS
you are apply the curve twice.

Jeff

Same with a step wedge, blocked up printed from Photoshop 7 smooth
printed from Picture Window. The one printed with sliders from
Picture Window was the smoothest. We are running Windows 98se. We
have been running a twisted pair network this way for over 2 years
never a glitch. We have had no reason to upgrade. We have 2000 in
it's box that's never been opened and have never felt a need to go
though the hassle.

We may be going the Apple route soon and printing with a 16 bit RIP.
Maybe not.
