I'm interested in hearing from others concerning favorite brands of black ink cartridges for use with black-only printing. (I'm using the Epson standard black in my 1280). Thanks. Norm

Thanks Richard and Bob. WHY is Eboni THE ink? Why not the Epson black? Norm: the Epson 1280 black is a dye ink which will fade over time. Eboni is pigment, which is archival. The Epson black seems to be a bit on the too warm side. Epson prefilled carts are very expensive and you get about 14cc of ink, Eboni comes in 4oz bottles for $18. But, if you like the Epson K, there's no reason in the world for you to not use it. If you want to try Eboni, a prefilled cart is around $22 from MIS www.inksupply.com Bob Michaels --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "nsams2002" <normsams@w...> wrote:

Bob Michaels turned me on to the cheap $5 color carts from MIS to occupy the color position. I set up a page on my site at http://www.jimarnold.org/1280/ detailing what I've learned. The biggest tip so far has come courtesy of Nick Nugent on this list. He advocated keeping the ink level in your ink bottle(s) at the same level as the print head. Once I started doing this clogs are virtually a thing of the past. For a very nominal investment you can be BO printing on your 1280 with a CF system that makes for a very inexpensive way to print. With BO printing the paper you print to largely determines the tone of your print from warm to neutral to cool. Cheers, Jim

Hello Norm, >WHY is Eboni THE ink? In addition to what the others have said, - Eboni gets among the very highest longevity ratings - It is less warm than other carbon inks - On certain papers that render carbon based inks cooler, Eboni is as close to a real neutral black as any pure carbon based ink there is. It's really beautiful stuff. My favorite paper for cold prints is Condor BW by Hawk Mtn. From what other experimentors have said (I've tried many papers but not all), it has the best Dmax of all the cool papers. Also, in my experience so far, flaking has been minimal, almost a non issue. - With Eboni and a range of papers you can make prints from very warm to cold neutral. Not all carbon inks look good on the various papers. Eboni is uniformly beautiful on every paper I've tried. It's great stuff and definitely worth a try.
