Using MIS UT inks, Roark curves - request help

Using MIS UT inks, Roark curves - request help

2004-07-02 by adolphamster

I have been trying to use the Roark UT2 curves with my Epson 1280
printer and MIS UT2 inks, with mixed results. I am using Picture
Window inasmuch as this program seems to handle the *.acv files well.
(Or is this an unwarranted assumption?)

The following is the "workflow" I am using:

Open PW (Picture Window)
Import a black and white image in 16 bit B&W format

Perform:

Transformation ->Convert to 24 bit color
	Transformation -> Color -> Curves

	Option : Reset
	Option : Load
		select Photoshop Curve files
Select: UT2*.acv file (here I select from among the 4 options: dark
sepia, light sepia, carbon, neutral)
	Apply (with RGB color space)

I then print using: Photo Enhance
		Tone: vivid
		Effect: sharpness

I seem to get "reasonable" results with the carbon and neutral files
(i.e., the carbon is slightly warmer than the neutral). But the light
and dark sepia results are very disappointing: the detail in the image
is severely compromised, the prints are muddy and both sepias seem to
have about the same value - rather light).

I'd appreciate suggestions? Or am I asking too much of the Roark
curves with this system?

	Thank you.

With curves, you must use "No Color Adjustment."

Hi Paul, yep got it set to "No Color Adjustment" in the driver. I
think OS, Photoshop version and all the other mind bending variables
with particular installations is coming into play here. The lack of
coherent permanent standards in this industry I believe is puts this
industry on very shaky ground with people that depend on this for a
living. With traditional processes I had a well laid out, finite set
of variables in my mind.

- The Particular films curve
- Exposure at time of capture
- Paper Curve
- Exposure of Paper

A little simplistic but no so really. The whole process could be
easily abstracted in my mind because semi-permanent standards by the
industry were adhered to. What will become of my RAW files in twenty
years. I personally believe this "lack of standards" is in fact
the "milk cow" of this industry. Knowing this makes me appreciate
your efforts all the more. Thanks Paul.

I don't think I should worry about this any more. My prints are
coming out superb printing from Picture Window with the Epson drivers
sliders. Thanks again.

When you said, "I then print using:
		Photo Enhance

I assumed "No Color Adjustment" was not checked. In my Windows XP &
Photoshop setup the "No Color Adjustment" does not appear when those things
are checked.

I think you have me confused with another post I never used Photo
Enhance.
