QTR 2200 with UT profile advice

QTR 2200 with UT profile advice

2004-07-23 by jhaneyzz

I have finally achieved some good success with QTR on my 2200 usint MIS UT inks.

The profile below gives me results that are very close to what I used to get with Piezotones
on my 1160. before it went kaput.

The only thing is, the prints are pretty warm.

I need some advice from experienced users on how to increase the presence of cool toner.

The thing is, I am already using very high defalut densities and can't really increase the ink
limit of M (the cool toner) that much.

I noticed that profies from other users have much lower ink limits than I seem to need to
get a very dense black.

I just pulled a print with the M density set to 100 and it was a bit cooler.

Is my next step to use toner curves?

I am replying to my own post so this gets tracked in the same forum.

I tired generating a curve to boost a little more of the cool toner into my slightly warm
prints.

My results were a bit stronger than expected. The poor girl in the test image came out
looking like papa smurf. HEAVY blue.

I made a curve that was linear and just gave it a healthy, but not obscene boost in the mid
to 25% tones.

I saved it as "toner_curve_1.acv" refrenced it in the curve file
"TONER_CURVE=toner_curve_1.acv" and made sure it was in the same directory as the
profile.

When I ran the profile the terminal window posted this:

Enter Descriptor Filename or Drag file to window: /Volumes/Drive\ Two/CurveDesign/
Other\ Inks/2200-UT-PR-cool.txt
usage: qacv filename.acv curvenum >curve.out
Creating curve 2200-UT-PR-cool for QUAD2200

I took a look at some elses curves and they reference a file called "toner-curve.raw" which
is a raw photoshop file. There is a corresponding "toner-curve.acv" file that has a very
unsual shape.

What do I need to understand about toner curve design, naming, and file formats?

I believe the procedure for creating a toner curve is as follows. Open
the grayscale-16.psd file in Photoshop. Go to Image>Adjust>Curves,
click the load button and select Roy's toner_curve.acv file. Click OK
(or edit the curve if you wish) and then save the file in Photoshop RAW
format. You would then reference this raw file in the script as
TONER_CURVE=toner-curve.raw

Also, your gray ink and toner ink limits seem to be quite high so you
might want to try reducing them as well (eg. set C, M, Y, and LC all to
60).
