museo paper compared to VFA?

museo paper compared to VFA?

2004-08-02 by lipshurt2002

Hello. First, thanks to the people who took and interest in my UT2/glossy episode.
I have gotten my Ut2 ink dialed in, which took only about 20 strips (six or seven per page)
and maybe 12 4x6 prints. Now I have 5 shades from cool to warm that all look great, on
all my papers. (with spay hopefully fixing the bronzing on pearl yada yada...) I have made
some really nice prints on Museo paper by Crane. (at least to my untrained eye)...On this
group, this paper is never mentioned. My medium warm UT2 setting looks pretty awesome
on this to me. I finally
have a print that has the right tone I want and the front to back 3D depth that I was
looking for. My question is, how does this paper compare to lets say Velvet fine art? I
have some Permajet Museum parchment which I liked the best of the Permajet Test
packet, but the museo is better to me. At my camera shop, North county camera in the san
diego area, you have to buy
before you see the papers. they have VFA, and all the Permajet, Epson, ilford, lumijet and
some others, but none of the ones that clayton jones likes. If most people think that
museo is better than VFA, I wont get VFA. Anyone have any experience with these? thanks
in advance. I am gonna have some fun this week re-printing my favorite prints!

was museo/VFA, now just a Dmax/opacity general question

2004-08-02 by lipshurt2002

well, I hit a snag with museo.....it just has no blacks. looks great on lighter stuff though.
Went thru a big to-do trying to get the blacks to come thru the shadows (black hair on
very dark background) and was a not-gonna-happen. I found some ilford smooth fine art
rag paper, which is not smooth, but the image worked well, so I think Museo is on my C
list. .....I noticed that museo has no opacity spec, but the ilford smooth fine art rag says
opacity 96%. I have some ilford matte two sided paper that say it has an opacity rating of
90% which looks exactly like museo in the dark areas. Does that number actually mean
anything that you can rely on when buying papers with your fingers crossed? Am I correct
in assuming then that there is big diference between an Opacity of 90%, and
96%?......Thanks as usual

A directory of papers and equivalent papers?

2004-08-03 by Douglas Meeuwsen

I just got some lumijet preservation classic velour, and some classic
radiant white rag at north county camera. The very first print, one
that museo could simply not touch popped out great. And a real nice
smooth but not like matte surface. Isnt this the same as some other
paper by one of the big makers? Does anyone know of a cross-reference
of what papers are really the same as such and such other paper? I have
been told by some of the big internet sellers, that there are very few
manufacturers, and everyone just puts a name on it, causing a lot of
confusion. I have been told by ....... at ....... that this was rubish
and "we make our own paper and nobody else has this product.....etc".
It would make things much easier I think if we knew for sure this
info......

Re: museo paper compared to VFA?

2004-08-03 by Tom OConnell

Museo and Velvet FA have nothing in common.

BTW, VFA is the only paper I have ever measured with a dmax equal to
EEM/EAM. It is a great paper for blacks. Problems are mainly that it
is flaky to an extreme at times.

Museo is a great paper if it is profiled (but dmax is clearly less
than VFA)...I would call it a cooler version of Ultrasmooth Fine Art
(not a risky comparison since the Epson UFA is made by Crane).

is it a good idea to spray fine art papers with printguard? especially
if people will be touching them occasionally?
