Roy,

Just curious about your progress on this. I bet a lot of folks can't
wait to get their hands on it.

Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-05 by Roy Harrington

I've just uploaded the first release of QuadToneRIP for the PC.
The initial version supports the 2200 with UltraChrome Inks.

Other printers and canned profiles will be available fairly soon.
Support for creating your own profiles is not available yet.

And the 1280? Hope you don't regret this, Roy.

Good new Roy. Thank you.

Epson 9000/9500 with Ultratone VM inkset (the very first)
profiles / linearisation later on ?

Roy, this is extremely welcome news. And it will become even more
welcome when this software supports the Epson 1280.

When I went to your web site and it said that the QTR is for Windows
XP Pro. Will it work also on Windows XP Home?

Hi Roy,

Just wanted to let you know that I downloaded and installed your
QTR/XP files onto one of my Win2K machines, followed the very simple
direcions you've provided and made my first print in less than 5
minutes.

Excellent. You're the best!

Richard

Re: Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

Hi Nelson,

I'd be happy to share, but must say I did nothing whatsoever besides
install and print. I used the defaults exactly as they are in the
files Roy provided without changing even a line of text:

1. Letter size EEM (or EAM, depending on your geography)

2. Image size was 5X5 at 360 ppi (a low-key, studio portrait of an
infant with very smooth and subtle tonal transitions)

3. Image in RGB mode, 8 bit, desaturated using modified c/m technique

Since my first post I have also made a couple of more prints using the
same settings, included some high-key images and enjoyed the same fine
results. I haven't even started to tweak anything because I'm having
too much fun!

Hope this helps, but Roy has already done all the work ;>)

Kind regards,
Richard

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-07 by Nelson Ricciardi

Thank you Richard

I´m also having fun printing images smaller than 8x10 in 360 ppi.

I´ll try a 5x5 using 720 ppi to see if it works. 8.5x11 in 720 ppi does not
work for sure.

Again, thanks a lot.

Richard and others

Same image in 8x10.

- 360 dpi, prints fine on letter size paper

[Digital BW] Re: Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-08 by richard_h95050

Hi Nelson,

I just ran an 8X10 @ 360 ppi, and the tonal transitions are still
"smooth as a baby's bottom" -- I guess I can safely say that because
the print is a studio shot of a newborn and mother, and that's the
main subject matter ;>)

Don't know what would happen over 8X10 or at 720 ppi, but since my
machine has a stack of letter-size EEM in it, that's what I'm playing
with. The only other question I have is regarding the need for the 720
ppi setting, and it's purely a theoretical question:

I haven't tested 720 PPI with QTR to see if it causes any problems for
me, but I also haven't found any reason to go to the higher res for my
own work (admittedly a subjective choice). I'm also running other
RIPs; Imageprint on my 9600, PiezoBW/Pro or Imageprint/Quad drivers on
my 7000 and Paul Roark's UT-2 (both EZ and w/curves) on my 1280. All
are fed at 360 ppi, and the output pleases my eye.

John Cone used to suggest pushing as much resolution down the pipe as
possible, but others present some interesting counterpoints about just
how much of that information actually impacts the print, depending on
how the RIP and/or driver handles the data, etc. -- and they're all a
bit different. Roy would be able to answer that for us about QTR, I'm
sure, and you as an artist are the best judge of your own results.

Speaking subjectively, I've can't pragmatically differentiate between
prints made using the additional ppi, and some of the RIP makers even
suggest letting their software do the work and not adding to the file
size unnecessarily. However, those are some of the ongoing technical
conversations that cycle continuously through the forums, and I'm not
trying to rekindle that flame (pun intended). The bottom line to me is
-- "be happy, make your clients happy and make beautiful prints".

Hope you get everything tweaked to meet your own personal workflow. It
would be interesting to know if the difference in ppi is really
evident in your prints -- I'm always interesting in taking a second
look at things and questioning my own assumptions... ;>)

Most of all, thanks to Roy for all his hard work, endless generousity,
and giving us all an exciting reason to be even having these dialogs!

Kind regards,
Richard

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-08 by Nelson Ricciardi

Richard,

What you say is correct. For most uses, 360 ppi is just perfect.

Anyway, I was told that the native resolution of the 2100/2200 is 720 ppi.
And for the 7600/9600, the native res is 360 ppi.

I´m just trying to get the best quality I can out of my printer> I always
believed that the right way to do was to send the file in the final res,
ready to print.

Michael Tapes, designer of Qimage, belongs to the group of people that
believe the best approach is to send the file in the native resolution. That
is the only reason I use this approach.

I never did any test myself. I was just following a recipe that seems to
work fine.

But your points are all valid.

Again, thank you for your input.

[Digital BW] Re: Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-08 by richard_h95050

Hi Nelson,

Good observations all the way around, and some very interesting
points. I'm sure we'll learn more about this question and QTR going
forward, and it appears from his latest Website update that Roy is
already looking at the 720 ppi question.

I appreciate the very nice exchange of perspectives -- thank you!

Kind regards,
Richard

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Announcement: QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-08 by Daniel Staver

Nelson,

I remember doing several tests early last year printing the same file at
360ppi and 720ppi. While I could distinguish some differences in
microfine details when using a loupe there was no way I could see any
difference at any reasonable viewing distances. After that I decided to
just scale all my files to 360ppi at print time and not worry about it.

PPI for QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-08 by Roy Harrington

I pretty much agree that you probably hard pressed to see the difference
of 360ppi versus 720ppi or more. But its probably image dependent and
viewer dependent. My usually method is to just print at whatever I have
unless its drastically too high or too low.

I've done a little checking of the code and I'll probably be able to fix it=
 so
it'll most likely be a moot point.
But I'm a little surprised that exactly 720 doesn't work. It is possible t=
hat
you are slightly over like 720.10?

RE: [Digital BW] PPI for QuadToneRIP for Windows XP

2004-08-08 by Nelson Ricciardi

Roy

Thank you for your support.

I'm sure that I'm doing 720 dpi.

Let me tell you my workflow. I use an Epson 2200, Enhanced Matte and letter
size paper.

(1) I load a 16 bit color picture on Photoshop. Convert it to B&H using the
Channel Mixer and save the file again still as a 16 bitt TIFF file. I
usually do not convert to grayscale and would like to know it that's
mandatory with QTR.

(2) Load Qimage, place the file on the page, make annotations and frames,
and print the picture to a file. That creates a new TIFF file for me. When I
print to a file I can specify the dpi and the size. I'm testing only 360 and
720. Will try 540 ppi and see what happens.

(3) I usually don’t do this for color work, but now that's I'm trying QTR I
open the NEW tiff file in Phothosop to see if everything is ok. And the
program show me the size and ppi information correct.

Problems I've found:

A - I can't send a picture larger than the letter size paper can handle. The
RIP can't resize the picture to the maximum size allowed. The RIP has the
information of the paper size I'm using. It should be able to tell me "my
friend, you're trying to print something that is too big" or, at least,
resize the picture for me.

B - I can't send a picture with 8.5x11 inches to the printer. I have to
consider the margin in my calculations. Something like 1/8 of an inch on
each side. I guess A and B are the same problem.

C - I can't print 8x10 with 720 ppi. Other were able to print it, but I'd
like to know it they were using letter size paper.

D - I CAN print 8x10 with 360 ppi just fine.

I'll try 7x9 720 dpi next and see if it goes.

Again, thank you for your support and congratulations.
