Having a small QTR problem on 9600

Having a small QTR problem on 9600

2004-08-08 by Dragonfly Imaging & Printing

Hi folks,

I'm trying out Roy's QTR on my 9600 and hoping to use it with my 4000
soon.
Nudge nudge wink wink.

QTR was working really well for each test I did until I hit a little
bump in the road.

I'm using a G4 running OSX.3.4 as my print server.
The print is a 15"x60" 8bit grayscale gamma 2.2 @ 360dpi image.
Printing starts off normally, chugging along to about 16", then stops!
It's done this many times, with different files, and every setting
change I could think of.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

John Toles

Hi John,

I've done at least 30" on a 7500 and 7600 without trouble.
A couple of things to look at:
Immediately after a problem print, run the Print-Gimp-Errorlog script
(you'll find it in the CurveDesign folder of the download). It'll show
any messages logged by the print system.

If your picture is a horizontal and you are using landscape mode for
printing, try rotating the picture in Photoshop and printing portrait
mode. Landscape requires a lot of extra memory and processing
to rotate the image -- maybe that's a problem.

Thanks for the suggestions Roy.

The image is vertical 15" wide by 58" tall and I have the paper size
set to 24" wide by 60" height. Good idea though. I didn't know that
Landscapes required more resources to print.

It was interesting reading the CUPS Error Log. The Quad9600 print jobs
showed no errors in the log, but they stop at 16" every time. Here's a
sample job:

I [08/Aug/2004:13:24:43 -0400] Adding start banner page "none" to job
667.
I [08/Aug/2004:13:24:43 -0400] Adding end banner page "none" to job 667.
I [08/Aug/2004:13:24:43 -0400] Job 667 queued on 'Quad9600' by 'toles'.
I [08/Aug/2004:13:24:43 -0400] Started filter
/usr/libexec/cups/filter/cgpdftoraster (PID 1657) for job 667.
I [08/Aug/2004:13:24:43 -0400] Started filter
/usr/libexec/cups/filter/quadrastertoprinter (PID 1658) for job 667.
I [08/Aug/2004:13:24:43 -0400] Started backend
/usr/libexec/cups/backend/usb (PID 1659) for job 667.

The following two error messages popped up a few times:

E [08/Aug/2004:13:32:06 -0400] [Job 668] Unable to get media size!
E [08/Aug/2004:14:00:48 -0400] get_printer_attrs: resource name
'/printers/øˇÕp' no good!

I'm not sure if this means anything, but compared to the Epson driver,
Gimp is painfully slow printing. Great quality, but slow.

All the best,

John

Hi John,

I've looked around and it seems that the gimp-print code is currently
limiting to the 44 inches that older printers maxed out at. I'm pretty su=
re I can
fix this in the next version. The slowness is another thing I'm working o=

[Digital BW] QTR profile questions.....

2004-08-09 by Richard Sintchak

I know I could email Roy directly but he must be a bit busy with new
Win XP users and I imagine others might know the answers too.

I'm a new Win XP QTR user and am getting some very nice prints with my
2200. One thing is I'm using my 2200 with MIS Eboni black ink and not
Epson OEM Matte Black. The prints from QTR look fine however, perhaps
they are slightly cooler than otherwise since Eboni is not at warm as
Epson Matte Black. Any issues using Eboni with QTR I might be aware
of, or if they look fine do not worry about it?

Next, for the EEM profiles I see one called CoolSe. How is that
different than the Warm, Cool and Sepia EEM profiles? Also how and
why is the "neutral" profile using Warm AND CoolSe. How about a
Neutral profile for PR? I only see Cool and Warm for PA paper.

Next, I see that for PR we should use the Premier Art profiles. What
are people's experiences using other papers than those listed so far?
I've tried printing on Kayenta Photo Matte using the EEM profiles and
Eclipse Satine using the Premier Art profiles and they look pretty
good. Would more specific profiles/curves make a huge difference?
How are the profiles/curves created? By Roy? Or can we make and
apply our own?

Thanks,

Richard

Richard,

This is the only one I can answer at the moment as I've just printed
two identical images, one cool and one coolSe. I have them side by
side in front of me. In tungsten light (it's night in the UK) the
cool seems very neutral to me, the coolSe hints at Selenium. So I
guess coolSe is Roy's s/h for a cool selenium tone. I wonder if
I'll have the same impression in daylight and when they've fully
dried?

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but the warm curve prints Roy's
view of warm - I like this very much, particularly blended 50% with
cool. And the Sepia is Roy's view of Sepia - another excellent
starting point to experiment with different blends. So far I've
tried various blends with cool. Take your pick which you like best.

Is that the Soft White Satine -- no optical brightners -- that you're
referring to?

Re: [Digital BW] QTR profile questions.....

Richard,

The "Se" in the CoolSe profiles stands for Selenium tone and these
profiles simply use slightly more light magenta ink relative to light
cyan, compared to the Cool profiles where light magenta and light cyan
are used in equal amounts. Neutral or a near neutral tone is achieved
by blending either the Cool or CoolSe profile with the warm profile to
get the desired tone - just experiment with various blending
proportions to get the "neutral" tone you like. Different papers will
usually have different ink limit values and also different partitioning
points, where the black and light black inks blend together. This may
or may not affect the print when using a specific profile for other
papers, depending on how similar they are. Usually, you won't see
dramatic differences when using the matte paper profiles
interchangeably with most of the cotton rag papers, but for critical
work it would be best to use paper/ink specific profiles. See the
instructions on Roy's site for the Mac version of QTR for information
on how profiles are constructed. I don't think that profile
construction has been implemented yet for the PC version.

Carl or Richard-

Please tell me what QTR is and if they or the UT7 inks are preferable for
B&W work on the epson2200.

Thanks,
