Doutone Conversions

When converting a B&W image to a duotone in Photoshop, I find that
the resulting image/print is always darker with less shadow
detail than the original B&W.
I haven't seen this mentioned in prior posts. My workflow is
pretty straight forward B&W mode> RGB mode> Duotone. Then I typically
have to Edit>Apply>Screen to lighten the print back to its
original luminosity. Is there a better way? Thanks.

I do not use duotones much..Duotones are used with color inks. However, I just read a great article on duotones in this month's Photoshop User magazine..You should be able to find this magazine in any bookstore..well worth it...i would definitely subscribe to the magazine.

Ross,

I read the article, but was amused that the example image of the final
duotone was printed completely wrong. It was such a jumble of mixed
colors that is was unidentifiable. It must have slipped through quality
control at the printer. I'm curious if your copy was the same.

Hi James

Yeah, it did look pretty weird..almost like the image was inverted in the article..I think it was black, green, and purple..pretty weird being that the article showed an example of a brownish pantone color.

nonetheless, it was a great article..text wise anyhow.
