John,

You wouldn't believe that, even with your tongue in your cheek, if you read
all the Mac lists that I do - everyone complains from morning to night about
the stupidities of the latest Mac OS ..... and how their printers won't
print any more.

Compared with that Windows XP seems quite brilliant!

These complaints about platform availability of various apps are
ridiculous and uninformed. The reason many graphics apps are either
Mac only or Mac first have to do with the fact that graphics
professionals have historically been largely on Macs. The fact that
more general consumer use apps are PC only or Mac later has to do with
the PCs dominance amongst the rest of the computer user base.
While there are some specialized apps more suited to one platform or
the other, these things occur primarily because of economics (where
the users are) not necessarily that one is "better" than the other.
That debate is left to people with too much list time on their hands.

If someone can't get their printer to work with OS-X they need their head
examined. After many years on the PC platform I made the switch and it has
been a massive breath of fresh air. Now when I go back to using a PC from
time to time it is frightening as to how painful it is. But each to their
own....This debate can't be debated - it is a matter of preference and
style. Some have more of the latter ;-)

BTW the new 2x2.5Ghz 64 bit G5 rocks!

I use both Macs and Windows, and have for years. Although I used to love
Macs for their graphic abilities (try printing from a PC back in Windows
3.1!) I am now also beginning to hate the new OS. I would switch my graphics
world to my XP machine in a second if I thought that printing to my Epsons
would be easy. So tell me, is it?

I have a 9600, 1160, 1280, and a 2200. How do these Epsons work in a windows
world?

RE: [Digital BW] smaller Mac market

Hi, Chris. I can't tell you about a comparison since I've never owned a
Mac. But, my home PC with XP and IP (Epson 2200) is pretty easy (easy is
good) and I've never had a stability problem with it. That's XP home.
Everyone in our firm bitches about XP Pro. Our IT manager told me I need to
come into the 21st century, so she ordered me an IBM notebook with XP pro.
I thought, OK, I need something to take on trips to download CF cards,
anyway, so no problem. Guess I'll find out if there is really a difference
in the versions.

It's terribly difficult. First I have to click on the "Print" button.
Then the printer window pops up and I have to click on the "OK"
button. Then the print comes out of the printer. TWO CLICKS! I
don't know how I stand it, but I just keep putting up with it.

It's terribly difficult. First I have to click on the "Print" button.

you don't have to click on anything on a mac - just say print - and it
does everything else on its own -
( some say you don't even have to say print - you just think about it -
and it does the job - )

I use 2 of your printers, the 1160 and 1290s (European 1280) and have
absolutely no problems printing from OSX 10.3.4. If your problem is printing
borderless under OSX, personally I have no need to. If I did, I could switch
back to OS9 on 2 of the Macs.

Oh the list is bored! Roy has stopped all the PC junkies from complaining
about the lack of good and economical B&W solution using OEM colour inks
(and any other inkset for that matter) - I hear the boys at Imageprint
trembling from here! The Mac addicts are as passionate as ever about their
stylish, secure and extremely capable machines! (Mac addicts stay cool - if
you were the majority you would no longer be trendsetting and hip!) The BO
boys are all likely to start playing around with QTR PC once the initial
bugs are ironed out and making that switch (sorry Clayton)! And the PC boys
are still happy with their ugly, clumsy, virus ridden black boxes!

Ahhhh, August... :-)

Thanks for replying. I have XP pro. My next step is to set up one of my
Epsons and try a print. I'm curious about the XP pro complaints there -I
have had no real problems here, and I am networked. Do you print B&W using
UT7?

RE: [Digital BW] smaller Mac market

2004-08-16 by chris

I don't print borderless. But often the MacOX sometimes demands that I dump
a print job and reinstall a printer because it doesn't like the paper ink
combo. I have to lie to it about paper type in order to print. And I keep
finding new versions of those damned cups and gimp printers in my printer
list, loaded in without my doing, especially for the 9600.

One more irritant. My dual processor Pentium with 1gig ram is faster than my
dual processor Mac with the same installed memory. But I'm getting off the
subject..

I use 2 of your printers, the 1160 and 1290s (European 1280) and have
absolutely no problems printing from OSX 10.3.4. If your problem is printing
borderless under OSX, personally I have no need to. If I did, I could switch
back to OS9 on 2 of the Macs.

I have a 9600, 1160, 1280, and a 2200. How do these Epsons work in a windows
world?

I have three of your four (1160, 1280, and 2200) that I use on two different
Windows computers (XP and ME). All work fine (the printers and XP that is,
ME is a disaster).

John,

You wouldn't believe that, even with your tongue in your cheek, if you read

all the Mac lists that I do - everyone complains from morning to night about

the stupidities of the latest Mac OS ..... and how their printers won't
print any more.

Compared with that Windows XP seems quite brilliant!

I run 10.3 with the 21/2200 and have QTR installed alongside the Epson

I've only ever printed on Epsons out of Windows and I couldn't be
happier. I have a greeting card company and print everything to an Epson
900...often over 1000 cards a month. My photo work prints to an Epson
2200. It's a cinch. Go for it.

It's terribly difficult. First I have to click on the "Print" button.
Then the printer window pops up and I have to click on the "OK"
button. Then the print comes out of the printer. TWO CLICKS! I
don't know how I stand it, but I just keep putting up with it.

I use a 7500, 7600 785EPX, 2 1280's and a Canon 960i under Win XP most using USB(1.1 & 2);1394 for 7500) and all work beautifully. The only hitch is that a patch for USB(1.1 & 2.) should be installed but this is part of the updates advised by Microsoft,

Steve,

> And the PC boys
> are still happy with their ugly, clumsy, virus ridden black boxes!

You really must get out a bit more. The beauty of the PC world is that PC's
come in an almost infinite variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. You can
even get transparent ones with flashing lights inside!

Mac owners are lucky I suppose that few virus writers waste their time
targeting Macs, but PC owners who get viruses only have themselves to blame.
With a firewall and a viruschecker (which update themselves automatically -
you don't even have to click on one button) and similar automatic updates of
Windows, viruses are not a problem. I've five PC's and never had a virus
infection. Yes, I get viruses sent to me, but my ISP removes most of them
and sends me a cleaned email, and on the rare occasion that that doesn't
work, my viruschecker identifies it and removes it. So viruses shouldn't be
a reason for not using a PC. If you can use Photoshop, you should have the
brains to take precautions against viruses, trojans, and the like. Spam is a
far bigger problem than viruses to me, but there again, you can make your
own filters in Outlook Express (I find this is better than letting your ISP
filter spam - they tend to take out most Yahoo groups emails).

Vive la difference - between PCs. ;)

ME is a disaster).

John,

You wouldn't believe that, even with your tongue in your cheek, if you read

all the Mac lists that I do - everyone complains from morning to night about

the stupidities of the latest Mac OS ..... and how their printers won't
print any more.

Compared with that Windows XP seems quite brilliant!

We may indeed be smaller, but vastly superior. Who said we ever aspired to
universality. We are way beyond that.

RE: [Digital BW] smaller Mac market

2004-08-16 by chris

Steve-

Thanks. I tried using the PC today to print, and it worked great. With the
Mac, I must continuously reset the "no color adjustment" setting that takes
the Epson out of the loop and lets the profile take over, and 1440 or 2880,
etc. These settings will not "stick" in the Mac, but they do on the PC. And
the "cups and gimp" drivers keep loading by themselves in my printer list!
The calibration software and print profile software works on the PC as well
as the Mac, and I don't use an ipod, so I see no reason to stay with the Mac
now.

This is after cursing windows machines through the years, and being a
hardcore Mac user (I've had 7 or 8 "heavy" Macs and as many PC's in my
business through the years) As recently as 1 year ago, I was saying that I
would always work on a Mac, and the transition from 9.28 to 10, 10.1, 10.3
10.3.5 panther cougar ocelot tiger pussycat whatever has been so difficult
that I'm not sure I ever want one again.

Thanks for your input.

Chris

RE: [Digital BW] smaller Mac market

I did, this morning, and you're right- it's a cinch. I experienced none of
the annoying glitches that have come lately with the painful transition from
system 9.2 to OSX. The PC has finally grown up and joined the ranks of real
computers.

Thanks

I've only ever printed on Epsons out of Windows and I couldn't be
happier. I have a greeting card company and print everything to an Epson
900...often over 1000 cards a month. My photo work prints to an Epson
2200. It's a cinch. Go for it.

It's terribly difficult. First I have to click on the "Print" button.
Then the printer window pops up and I have to click on the "OK"
button. Then the print comes out of the printer. TWO CLICKS! I
don't know how I stand it, but I just keep putting up with it.

Thanks for replying--I made a switch today, and am convinced! I'll probably
not buy another Mac.

I use a 7500, 7600 785EPX, 2 1280's and a Canon 960i under Win XP most
using USB(1.1 & 2);1394 for 7500) and all work beautifully. The only hitch
is that a patch for USB(1.1 & 2.) should be installed but this is part of
the updates advised by Microsoft,

I had been thinking that it was a problem with the drivers. I'll call Epson
today to see what they think. Thanks for letting me know.

Chris - it is your call as to whether you think you need to change
platforms to get your printer to work but most people don't have any
problems. (the beta release of OS X 10.1 was a real mess I agree but 10.2
and especially 10.3 are sweet.) I have a 2100 and run it without problems
using a CFS with matt black, a CFS with photos black and the Epson OEM inks,
and with QTR and the Epson driver. Swapping from PK to MK was the problem
that most people had in OS-X but that is easily solved. Add the printer to
your printer list with MK in it and rename the printer to denote MK. Then
put the PK ink in it and re-add the printer, changing the name to denote PK.
After that you are done - choose the printer depending on what ink you are
using. Re your sticking issue, try naming and saving the setting set. Then
when you go to print just select the set you want. The utility Print Setup
Repair (available on Versiontracker) is a little gem also for permissions
problems and the like.

RE: [Digital BW] smaller Mac market

Steve-

Thanks for the tips. Even after saving and renaming these settings, they
just will not stick. Actually, to make matters more confusing, they do stick
with the 2200 some of the time, but never with the 9600. Because of the
intermittency, I have to go through the steps each time. I'll check out
versiontracker.

But my interest in changing platforms is twofold- speed is primary. I can
put together a killer system (see Joe Dempsey's recent posts) with up to 4
gig ram and faster internal hard drives, much cheaper than Mac's
stranglehold. Finally, I will not have to maintain 2 separate systems.
(read: 2 versions of Photoshop!)

Steve,
Can you tell me how to rename the printer? When I change ink and add it, I can't
seem to rename it. Do I need to go into the "advanced" add?
thanks.
