QTR versus Imageprint

QTR versus Imageprint

2004-08-16 by yaakovsinclair

How much better is QTR than using the black only option on the 2100?
The results I have had seem pretty good to me.
How much cheaper is QTR than Imageprint?
Is Imageprint better - or just more expensive than QTR?
thanks!

Re: [Digital BW] QTR versus Imageprint, QTR vs. BO

Someone on this list recently predicted the demise of BO printing now
that QTR for windows is here. I'm a big BO fan but also missed the
ability to do more intense shading like sepia, and some images might
indeed be better with smoother highlights and mid-tones. BO is
definitely not a perfect end-all for B&W printing on a 2200. I just
happen to really like the look it gives. However, that said, I
anxiously downloaded QTR for windows when it came available. After a
few dozen or so prints I have to say it's a wonderful program and I
may use it from time to time. It does give smoother tones in certain
ranges but by virtue of that for the most part the QTR images do lack
a bit of the BO "pop", which is one main reason I like BO so much.
But for the images that do not work so well for BO I'll be considering
QTR prints as an alternative. And of course the sepia ability of QTR
is nice.

As for how it compares to IP I've downloaded and used the demo version
(with BIG watermarks across the prints) and do not have the extensive
experience of IP to compare it well with QTR. My limited experience
tells me that although IP might have more profiles and a bit more
functionality the $500 or so for IP vs. the $50 for shareware QTR
speaks for itself.

YOu have to compare apples and apples. The only relevant test would be
to compare an ink setup and linearization in QTR similar to IP's. You
can set up QTR so many ways, including BO and variations on it, IP
like B&W setups, quads, any number of things.
So saying it kills BO or IP methods is a non-starter.
Assuming all else is equal, I'd give the nod to QTR for being so
versatile, linearizable, and reasonably priced. BO users might be well
advised to try it as well, assuming the normal Gimp otions are
available, there are dither settings etc. that could impact your
results and be worth comparing to Epson driver BO results.
