A few questions/observations about QTR for Windoze

A few questions/observations about QTR for Windoze

2004-08-17 by Beau

Hello All,

This is my first posting to the group - thanks for being there! After Roy was kind enough to help me with a glitch (my fault!) I finally got QTR for Windoze to print for me and I'm impressed! I used Epson Enhanced Matte paper and the print is as neutral as Switzerland! Roy did a great job. Since he's out of town for a week, I thought I might run a few questions by the group if I may.

1) I'm one of those weird people who like to print B&W on glossy paper (I like how the blacks look) and there's obviously no profile for Epson's PGP. Is it inadviseable to use the EM profile but stick glossy paper in the printer? Might I experience a meltdown and catch my hair on fire?

2) I'm fuzzy on how one might use larger paper sizes loaded from the manual slot behind the printer. When using Epson's driver, I have to tell it to pull the paper from the rear, and while I see in the batch file QTR supports bigger paper sizes, I can't see where to tell it to pull that paper from the manual feed slot in the back of the printer.

3) Probably only Roy could answer this, but is support for either of Epson's Semi-gloss or Premium Lustre papers in the works?

4) I tried using the QTR GUI this morning too and it almost worked! The printer only printed about 3/4ths of the print though and stopped.

5) Does QTR use all of the Epson inks to get such a neutral print?

Finally a last observation. A couple of month's ago, due to the 2200's less than stellar B&W performance with Epson drivers, I bought an HP 7960 printer and was totally blown away by the B&W prints. Even though QTR seems to perform as "advertised", I still prefer the HP prints. I suspect that's a paper issue for me though and not the fault of QTR. To me, the HP papers look better than Epson's Enhanced Matte paper. HP's "matte" looks more like Epson's Premium Luster to me, and HP's "pro" glossy papers just look amazing. Again, I suspect this is perhaps just a personal preference thing - some may like Enhance Matte, but I'm just not a big fan - I find the tonal gradations of the HP/Glossy combination look better to my eye and thus my question about using different papers with QTR.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments. Ol' Roy deserves a medal! ;-)

beau :)

Answers to some of your questions:
1) Use the OFB profiles for your RC papers, assuming you have the Photo
black ink installed in your 2200.
2) Don't know how you handle this with the PC version, but I find that
no special paper feed instructions are necessary with the OS X version
(printing from Photoshop) - just load the paper manually in the rear
feed slot and print as usual.
3) I have profiles for Epson Premium Semigloss that were made under OS
X, but I think the .quad files should work fine with QTRPC as well
since all of the other profiles you have were also made using QTROSX.
Send me an email if you want to try them. You should be aware that the
Epson UC inks bronze quite badly on all of the RC papers, particularly
when printing B&W. You can eliminate some of this by spraying the
prints later with PremierArt PrintShield. I also have a neutral
profile for printing on RC papers that uses only the LK, LC, and LM
inks (no black ink used) so you could keep the matte black loaded for
printing to matte papers and not have to switch to Photo black for
printing to RC papers. You won't get as high a dmax with this "no
black ink" profile, but for most images it works OK (dmax about 1.77 on
semimatte and luster).
4) Can't help you with this one.
5) No. The cool profiles use K, LK, LC, and LM only. The warm
profiles use K and LK only. Sepia uses K, LK, LM, and Y. Generally
the amounts of the "toner" inks (LM, LC, and Y) used are quite small -
hence no metamerism.

Welcome to the group! I can answer one of these...

> 5) Does QTR use all of the Epson inks to get such a neutral print?

For cool and coolSe, QTR uses K, c, m, k inks.
For warm, QTR uses K, k inks.
For sepia, QTR uses K, Y, c, m, k inks.

K = black
C = cyan (not used)
M = magenta (not used)
Y = yellow
c = light cyan
m = light magenta
k = light black

If you open the profiles (e.g. EEM_2200-coolSe.quad) in a text editor, you can determine which inks are being used.

In the absense of the Profile editor for windows it is still easier
to look at the Mac txt profiles which are much more readable. All
that is needed is an unsit for windows of which there many.

Carl

As another of those who like to print B&W on glossy paper, I was interested
in your response to Beau's questions. I would love to try your profile for
Epson Premium Semigloss and also your neutral profile that does not use K,
if you'd care to share them.

TIA

Tom,

I've attached the premium semigloss profiles (PSG) and the RC paper
"noK" profiles in a zip archive. Let me know whether or not they work
with QTRPC.

Are there any inks that don't bronze on the RC papers? If so are
there any .quad profiles for the 2200 running on windows?

Thanks,

Edwin

Re: [Digital BW] A few questions/observations about QTR for Windoze

2004-08-18 by Carl Schofield

I've found that the MIS UT and UT2 inks exhibit somewhat less bronzing
than the OEM UC inks on RC papers. Also, cast coated papers like Epson
Photo Paper exhibit almost no bronzing, compared to the newer micropore
RC papers (eg. Premium semigloss, gloss, luster, etc.). I have some
2200 UT profiles for Epson Photo Paper and I believe that Roy also has
1270/1280 profiles for UT2 inks and several RC papers.
