How to get selenium tones with UT2?

How to get selenium tones with UT2?

2004-08-19 by spswe

Hello everyone,

I just recently started with MIS inks on my EPSON 1280 and I'm quite
impressed. Being used to a real darkroom I have to say that I was
positively surprised by the print quality.

I started with the EPSON driver sliders and now I'm using Paul's
curves with PaintShop Pro. I converted them manually from ACV format
into PaintShop Pro adjustment curves. They work great and PaintShop
Pro is a great deal in terms of price and functionality.

I was wondering if anybody has some advice on how to generate more of
a selenium coolish blue tone in the print. I'm using the
UT2_GlossyPP_Carbon, _Sepia, and _Neutral curves and the prints look
great. However, I'd like to expand the tint spectrum towards a coolish
blue tone by modifying the neutral curve but I'm not sure where to
start. The EPSON sliders seem not to give enough control and the print
looses some of its smoothness.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Her is a response Paul put out some time ago for a request for cool
curves:

"I agree cool curves would be good, but I have not had time to making
them
yet. I explained how to adjust the neutral curve for warmer or cooler
prints in my Readme file. Basically, just make offsetting moves of
the cyan
and magenta inks (red and green curves).

The one cool curve I did make, for PermaJet's Oyster paper, moved the
neutral Red curve down (adding more ink) 18 at 63 (that is, from (63,
93) to
(63, 75), 32 at 127 (the mid point), and 41 at 191. I moved the green
curve
up 22 at 63, 37 at 127, and 46 at 191. That curve also has some shadow
point below 63 that had some offsetting moves. The changed above took
the
tone from neutral to 0.06 units cool. (Carbon is 0.10 warm for
comparison.)
I think about 0.06 units cold is getting close to as cool as I'd want
to go
and still have a "normal" looking print. If you go too far the print
starts
looking blue instead of gray"

QTR also has cool curves that are quite cool.

Hope this helps

Hi Detlef

You can try to customize your curves. First, I would print out the purge6 file so you know where each ink tone is positioned...for the UT2 inks, the cyan is the cool gray ink.

Therefore, you can change the Red curve of the UT2_GlossyPP_Neutral curve to have more cyan (cool gray ink) than yellow (warm ink - via the blue curve).

However, you want the cyan to equal yellor from 25-85% and there should not be any cross-overs of cyan and yellow ink positions in these midtones.

This is easier to do with a spectrophotometer but can be done visually as well. Just start playing with the curves to get the visual effect you desire.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. I am just starting to customize my own curves and am learning with experience.

Have fun!

Hi Ross,

Thanks for your explanation.

I will try the method you described below and see how it works for me.
I was wondering though what the purge6 file is?

Enjoy your printing!

Hi Detlef

Below is the link for the purge page on the MIS website:

http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/purging.html

You will want to download the zip file to your computer..Then, open the purge6 file in picture window or photoshop. Lastly, make sure the purge6 file is in RGB mode, apply the neutral curve, and lastly print.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
