Digital BW, The Print

I have the Epson C84 running with Win XP , PS CS. I am trying to print 
some landscapes with the EZ inks. I have the appropropriate inks for 
glossy installed. Using Epson Premium Glossy, the prints are 
invariably lighter than my calibrated monitor or Epson R800 BW prints.
The best I could do was Glossy Paper, Brightness -10, Contrast -8,
Best Photo. The problem with lighter tones was not in the blacks, but
in the mid-to-dark greys. This detracts from the drama of the print. 
 Anybody have experience with this ?
  If I switch to matte with the black for matte prints will I have the
same problem ?
   Would greatly appreciate a reply.
