B & W photography

2004-09-16 by jcohen17_1999

I have an epson 2200 which i would like to start doing some black and
white on. i am very new to the idea of black and white in digital and
would like to know if there is some book or educational material to
get started. from what i read on this thread it seems very complex
and expensive. i am an amateur and only doing this for personal
pleasure. i also have an HP 7960 printer which i guess is suppose to
be able to print b & w.

thanks

joel

Printing B&W is only expensive if you're seeking absolute perfection.
However, you can get good results with what you've got. Printing in black
only mode works fine, with the limitation that the result has a slight warm
cast and is a bit grainier than using color inks. Printing B&W in color mode
works reasonably well if you use the latest profiles downloadable from
Epson's web site, although the grayscale isn't absolutely neutral at all
levels, and does exhibit a little metamerism under different lighting.

There is a lot of good info in the archives of this group, although there's
a lot of noise to wade through as well. Probably the most important thing to
investigate initially is the many ways of converting color to B&W. How you
do that will have more effect on your final output than the techniques or
tools you use to do the actual printing.

It can be complex and expensive but it doesn't have to be. One of the
best ways to get started is both easy and inexpensive. Black Only
(BO) printing uses just the black ink and doesn't require partition
curves or paper profiles. With no extra expense you can get started
right away and begin your journey up the learning curve. As you gain
some experience and learn more you can try other systems whenever you
feel ready.

There is good information about BO printing in a series of articles on
the web site link below. It has step-by-step instructions on how to
get started. If you don't mind spending a small amount of money, get
an Eboni black ink cartridge from MIS. It will give superior results
(this is discussed in the articles).

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Clayton

Clayton,

I've just ordered the new MIS UT2 complete cartridge inkset for my 1280. This will be my first foray into quad/hex tone printing. I've only done BO previously.

One question though, I'd like to go back and forth between the quad/hex using the UT2 and BO printing. I will be using EEM. To do the BO, I was assuming that I would just use the Eboni catrdige that comes with the UT2 inkset. You mention in your website that there is a special Eboni required to do BO printing. Did I get this right? If I want to do BO with this set up, do I have to buy a different Eboni cartridge?

Thanks.

No, it's the same ink. The specific mention in the article was
because some people were ordering the wrong cart from among the many
offered on the MIS web site. I put that there just to help ensure
they ordered the right one.

I'm currently experimenting with UT7 in my 2200 and am also doing BO
with the same Eboni cart. Works fine either way.

Clayton
