QTR profiles for 2200 PC users

QTR profiles for 2200 PC users

2004-10-13 by Carl Schofield

I've put a zip archive containing Epson 2200 QTR profiles (.quad files)
for several papers on my filesharing site. The file to download is
titled QUAD2200.zip and it can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/scho/FileSharing2.html

The papers included are as follows:

Papers for use with UC Photo Black ink (pk):
PJO - Permajet Oyster
MCL- InkJetart Microceramic Luster (can also be used for Epson premium
luster)
OrientalFB - Oriental Graphica Fiber Base Glossy
EPreSemiGl - Epson Premium Semigloss

Papers for use with UC Matte Black ink (mk):
MBW- Piezography Museum Bright White (also for Entrada Bright white or
Condor BW)
EFAn - Entrada Fine Art Natural
HPR - Hahnemuhle Photo Rag
PremierFineArt - Premier Fine Art Natural (same as epson ultrasmooth)
EEnhMatte - Epson Enhanced Matte

For use with any RC paper - uses no black ink so either pk or mk can be
loaded:
UC-RC-NoK

Thanks Carl very much for these! Do you use Ilford Smooth
Gloss or Pearl (or anyone else)? If so, what QTR profile?
I tried your Epson Prem Semigloss but it's not quite right
(I think).

Thanks

I do, I use a Prem Semigloss profile given to me by Roy himself. Don't
know if it is different from yours.

Try the MCL or PJO profiles with Ilford Smooth Pearl or the noK profile
for neutral. I gave up using RC papers with the UC inks because of the
bronzing problems.

Re: QTR profiles for 2200 PC users

Thanks Carl. Solved my missing profile for HPR paper. Roy's latest
MAC version does not have this profile listed.

Now here comes the stupid question.

What is the no black profile all about? Obviously black pK or mK is
not used but when would you use this profile and why. You mention it
can be used with any RC paper could you elaborate please.

Thanks
Peter

Re: [Digital BW] Re: QTR profiles for 2200 PC users

The noK profile was designed to give a neutral print on RC paper with
consistent tone into the shadow areas. The pK ink will typically
result in warm tones in deep shadow areas so I just left it out of the
mix and used only LK, LM ,and LC across the whole scale. The toned LK
has enough density to give a reasonable dmax, but will not be as high
as the pK ink. The noK is also just a "convenience" profile for those
who primarily print on matte papers but have the occasional need for an
RC print (no need to switch black inks).

Carl:

These are probably newbie question but:

1. How do I make these profiles available to the QTR once I've
downloaded them?

2. Are there any profiles available for Epson Premium Glossy?

Thanks.

Terry,
I use a Mac so I'm not familiar with the PC install procedure, but I
assume you would only need to put the profiles in the same folder with
the original profiles and run the profile install script. I haven't
profiled Epson Premium Glossy, but the OFB (Oriental Graphica Fiber
Glossy) or Epson semigloss profiles might also work OK.

Hans

Is this the same profile for Epson Prem Semi-gloss that was included
in the zip file from Carl, or is it different? (I thought that Roy
was principally Mac. I forget if you're Mac or PC. I have no idea
whether the profile files are the same or not on PC and Mac, but I
suspect not.)

Hi Ferdinand,

I'm on PC. I don't know if they are the same, I downloaded the zip file
from Carl but haven't unzipped them yet. I'll have a look tonight.

Ferdinand,

The name is different, so probably the profiles are different. I should
make some testprints to see any actual difference.

Ferdinand,

I made a test print and the 2 Epson Semigloss profiles look very, very
similar - so they probably are :)
But the PJO (PermaJet Oyster) profile from Carl is clearly the winner
for use with Ilford Smooth Pearl. This is remarkable, because for color
prints I also use a PermaJet profile.

It should be possible to see if the profiles are actually the same
file with different names by using a file compare routine. Any chance
of getting a copy of the profile from Roy? I wonder why they weren't
released. I find the semi-gloss profiles a bit warm, and am yet to
see if I can cool them down enough.

The Permajet thing is remarkable. I tried your suggestion to use this
profile for colour in Ilford smooth pearl, and agree that it removes
almost all the green cast. But what is your story this time about how
you stumbled across its suitability for B&W? Are you trying all the
new PC profiles for QTR with all the paper combinations, or was it
serendipity again?

I will try the Permajet profile. What mixture of cool and warm
settings are you using?

Thanks.

QTR or QTRgui doesn't like international characters

2004-10-16 by Daniel Staver

Just noticed a small bug when printing some pictures with QTR and QTRgui
yesterday. If I try to print files with any Norwegian charcaters
(\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd) in the filenames the files refuse to print.

I don't know whether the problem is with QTR or QTRgui. It's very easy
to avoid this by renaming the files anyway so it's not a major problem.

RE: [Digital BW] QTR or QTRgui doesn't like international characters

2004-10-16 by Stephen Billard

I checked this out. QTRgui passes the correct file name on in its batch
file. However, when QuadToneRIP displays the name in its log, the name has
changed. I used the "æ" character. It changed into "µ". I am not familiar
enough with extended character sets to speculate why it would change like
that.

Anyway, needless to say, QuadToneRIP could not open the image since it had
the wrong name.

I do not understand this. Are you saying that you use this **.quad
prifile for Color printing? Please could you inform me how to use
this profile for color because I like the Ilford paper But have
always a green cast when color printing, even by using the profile
supplied by Ilford.
BTW uptil now I have applied the enhmatte profile for printing b&W on
Ilford Smooth pearl with great results with the mix coolse and warm
at 85%. This gives me a print that looks as if wet printed on PE paper
Thanks,
Bert

It may have to do with the OEM/ANSI issue. Windows uses ANSI
character sets and the engine that QTR is built on may be translating
to OEM. I don't know enough about it to be certain, but I know it can
be an issue, and the symptoms sound like it. Roy can probably answer
for sure.

Clayton

I don't think there are any translations going on. But .bat files are
from ancient history -- DOS, so none of that old code was written
for anything but simple 7 bit ascii. I haven't any idea what those
special characters are represented by or what ancient code does with
it. Just ordinary special characters like space and ampersand cause
a lot of grief.

For color printing on Ilford Smooth Pearl I use the PermaJet Oyster
profile which I downloaded from the PermaJet website.

Great thanks the Carl and Hans. I just tried the PJO that Carl has
in his download file on a 2100 (with 2200 software), UC, PK, Ilford
Smooth Gloss using QTR and QTRGui and it's produced the *best* B&W
I've had yet (from various QTR profiles under MK, EEM and also the
Epson and Carl's semigloss on ISG). So far I'm using 60% cool,
40% warm and it's beautiful. Slightly on the dark side in the shadows
compared to my unprofiled screen, but _lightness_ I can fix. I can say
there is *no* cast there at last!! Yippee!! Now I can print my 7
11x14's for the B&W exhibition due at the end of this week!

Thanks again Carl and Hans, and also everyone else on the list for
the wonderful help and information.

Robert
