Premier Art Print

2004-10-25 by Steve Schaefer

I just recently picked up a Epson 4000. I have mostly been printing on Premium Luster 250. I picked up some Premier Art Print Shield hearing that it helped the print in several different ways. I just sprayed my first 16x20. It did seem to help the blacks a bit and maybe the bronzing problem but it left the surface blotching looking. I applied the four coats as the direction suggested.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Hi Steve,
I have only used PrintShield on Luster when the print will not be
mounted behind glass.
It seemed to work very well, using two or three light even mistings.
Keep practicing. You'll get the hang of it.
Cheers, John

I use this spray all the time as well as the Lyson Printguard. I've never had a problem
except for once - don't spray any RC paper until it is aired out for 24 hours! Gases are
released and trapped under the spray. This is a common problem for framers also. If you
send an inkjet rc print to the framers and he puts it behind glass before it cures it will fog
up, just like with the spray and ruin the print. I spray rag papers within a short time and
have never had a singe falure after hundreds and hundreds of prints on all kinds of media,
including linen, canvas, premium luster ( after 24 hrs ) etc.

Or, dry the print (any print, matte, glossy, whatever) with a hairdryer
first. Drive off the glycols and glycerins that are so slow to evaporate
under ambient temperature. You'll smell them going to vapor.

I have the same problem especially when the image has large swathes of
black. The spray mottles the blacks. There is a fine line between a heavy
enough coating to avoid mottling and spraying too much and soaking the
print. A little too hit and miss for me.

To be honest I have found the whole B&W on RC paper printing a frustration.
There's bronzing and differential reflectance issues. Spraying (I have used
Lyson Print Guard) helps but then you have the issue of mottled blacks. I
have not found a solution and am a bit surprised that others don't seem
bothered by the issue you and I are experiencing - I have raised this issue
here before. As a result, I have not done much RC printing of late. In my
experience, these issues are significantly less in colour work. As a result
I would like to understand a little better what actually causes these issues
and why it might be that a spray helps. (I am using a 2100 with an MIS CFS
with their UC equivalent inks.)

To be honest I never print monochrome on rc papers, I don't like the way they look with
any inkset, so the spray issues with them I don't know about. But spraying color after 24
hours has never been problem for me and it does reduce the bronzing.
