Inkjet B&W printing

Inkjet B&W printing

2004-11-05 by rring_foto

I am looking to buy a new wide format photo printer and I am trying
to decide between the epson 1280S and the Canon i9900. Does anyone
have experience printing B&W photos with the new Canon. I have read
excellent reviews of its color printing, but none about how it
handles B&W. I have a 1280, but it is dying an untimely death and
am wondering whether I should go with a 1280S or the Canon.

Any thoughts?

Rich

If the i9900 is the same as the i9950, then this review might be of
help. He at least talks about and shows a few samples of B&W, not much,
but some.

Shortcut to page:
http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Canon%20i9999/page_1.htm
(in the shortcut use the arrows at the bottom of each page to navigate
if the top drop down list doesn't work)

If the above doesn't work then use the long way:
http://www.photo-i.co.uk
then click: reviews
then click: printers
then click: Canon i990 & i9950

Hope this is of some use.

I have profiled the i9900, it's much more well behaved and linear in
it's unprofiled state than any Epson I have profiled. This is refering
to the OEM RGB drivers of course. The Canon's superiority in this
regard results in B&W that is much better than the Epson and actually
usable, assuming a very good custom profile.
However, printing B&W with the color inks, particularly dyes, has it's
drawbacks.

I agree with Tyler.
We have a client who does their proofing on a i9900. I made custom
profiles for Canon Pro Gloss, Legion Photo Silk and Arches Infinity
Smooth.
It is a very well-behaved printer with the Canon driver, and makes
respectable B&W prints.

I'm not the original message poster, but I'd like to add this question
since I too am still shopping for my solution:

Does anyone know if there are Wilhelm results for this printer and ink
on various papers? I couldn't find it just now.

Does it take kindly to both watercolor papers and gloss? (I don't know
the referenced papers below)

Thanks,

Lynn,
FWIW, I think that the i9900 prints are excellent. Wide color gamut
with excellent saturation. Pretty neutral B&W using color inks, and/or
black-only.
I like the dye-based deep blacks on the watercolor paper when compared
to my own epson matte black UC inks. This fellow has tested many papers
and his favorites are the ones I listed below.
Sorry, I cannot comment on their archivability.
Cheers, John

Thanks John. This is a great list. It's GREAT to have options.

I'll see if I can get an answer from Wilhelm and if so I'll report back
here.
