When to do final sherpening?

When to do final sherpening?

2004-12-03 by peterzakos

Now I am confused. I apply the final the final unsharp mask filter
just before printing, i.e. AFTER downsampling the image file.
However in the recent "computing power" posting John advises to do
it before downsamling. Was I doing it wrong all this time? What's
the consensus?
Peter.

Well it was last thing before your print and usm appropriate to printing
method. In doubt run an experimentiation and compare results - go with the
work flow that looks best to you.

Why do you downsample for printing? Don't you always print the full
resolution image?

I always sharpen last, when I edit an image for printing. If I then make a
smaller version for the web, I find I need to resharpen a tad.

personally I don't usually print from 1200 or 1600dpi 400+mb image files to
make a 360dpi 11x14 print - so yes, I generally downsample and then sharpen
after that (usually using an edge sharpening tool rather than just PS
unsharp mask).

I am sorta new to digi printing and am still trying to nail down my
workflow, so I may have mislead you, but I have noticed that when I
sharpen prior to downsizing, I have much better control of USM and am
far less likely to overdo it- and my prints just look better to my
eyes. I find that proper use of USM is one of hardest things to get a
grip on in the digital process, as its artifacts aren't always
apparent on screen or, at first glance, in the print. Again, my
experience may be related to my green-ness.

But hey, couldn't hurt to try it anyway!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
