Bernd,
I find even with the most recent MIS VM curves (on a Mac), printing in
2880 mode results in much more posterization than 1440 mode. About 90%
of my files print well right out of the box at 1440 but I need to tweak
the curves to get good tonal renditions at 2880. Are you on a Mac or PC?

Bernd, thanks. I'm convinced. I've seen FS via Cone there is a slight
increase in contrast - an easy fix, and for the price... I've got some on
order.Would you recomend VM for an 1160 (4 colour printer)?

Julian,
if you print MIS FS with the Cone driver there is virtually no
difference in quality to the Piezo inks, though the tone is slightly
cooler.
If you print MIS FS with the Epson driver on an 1160 you may see
dots, but only with a magnifier. In a normal view-distance there is
no difference in quality
If you print MIS VM with Paul\ufffds curves on an 1270/80/90 in the
2880 dpi mode you don\ufffdt see dots any longer, even with the
magnifier.
These prints are great. The only problem may be: changing big
files from greyscale to RGB is time and memory consuming,
Printing big files in 2880 dpi mode is also rather time
consuming (like printing on a 3000 with the 5.1.3e update of the
Cone driver).
(Sample prints will be on their way tomorrow)
Bernd

Julian,
I can´t say anything about MIS VM on an 1160, I suppose that
results are similar to the prints with FS inks in quality and dot
visibility because driver and possible print-resolution are the
same. So you should see some dots ( under magnification) But
I really don´t know what Paul´s curves are doing with the 1160
driver.
Maybe Paul knows something about quality difference between
1160 with 1440 dpi and 1290 with 2880 dpi.

Peter,

with the MIS VM inks I´m on PC because on a Mac I couldn´t
apply Paul´s 1280 curves to my 1290 printer (extrem
posterization) - and it was impossible for me to run the 1290
with the 1280 driver on a Mac.
Under WinME I can run the 1290 with the 1280 driver and #13
curves without posterisation.
Under WinXP I can apply the #13 - 1280 curves to the 1290 and
run it with the original driver.
That worked fine for me for some days ..... meanwhile I have a
new problem here: the print stops at 3/4 image since this
morning, though I have much space and memory.
As I get no error message I don´t know what to do (reinstalling
the driver doesn´t fix the problem).

The 1280 is measurably the best/smoothest I've seen -- especially at 2880.
But the 1280 at 1440 is so good, using 2880 is seldom worth the wait.

The 1160 is very good, and it is my favorite (in part, due to the ink-mixing
efficiencies of having only 4 inks). Some can see the dots in the colder
curves under bright light and up very close. Kodak defines its viewing
distance for its grain standards at 14 inches. So, I use that also. At
that distance, I cannot see dots in the 1160 output.

The 1280 at 2880 prints differently than at 1440. Because most 1280 owners
appear to prefer 1440, I switched to 1440 as the standard resolution for the
curves for that printer. I have some draft 2880 curves for those who want
them.

Paul;

The 1280 curves for the Mac on the MIS site are described as "draft
curves". The 1280 curves on the Yahoo list site all appear to be PC
curves. Have you developed any final curves for the 1280 Mac? If not,
how far off are the MIS site draft curves? What should I be looking for
as far as what I can improve?

Thanks in advance!

-Jeff

Consider them final for the near future. They should be very good, judging
from what I've seen of Jerry's prints and test strips.
