Black Only (BO) print with epson 2200

Black Only (BO) print with epson 2200

2004-12-24 by vartkes_peltekoglu

Hello there, I am a new memeber of this group. I wonder if any of you
out there has experience with BO printing on Epson 2200 as described
in the essays written by Clayton Jones.
I tried his recommended procedure with Epson Matte Ink and epson
Enhanced Matte paper and got an print that has a brown cast - almost
like a duotone - definitely not metamerism. The same image printed
with the same ink/paper set with Imageprint RIP produced a perfect
grey-scale print. Am I observing a characteristic of Epson matte ink
with BO setting?
thank you for any feedback I recieve.
cheers
vartkes

I have a 2100-printer, but I think results are the same as with
2200. Yes, BO with those materials gives warm(ish) tone on prints. I
like it and use it in some photos but I use QTR in most B&W
printing.
Cheers, Esa

Actually, they are not. At least, the drivers are different. B&W
prints using the 2100 driver's "black" setting use colour inks and
suffer from the effects of metamerism. The 2200 driver's "black
only" setting uses only black ink (when I last tested it).

Strange, but my 2100 with "black" uses only black ink (checked with
loupe etc)and gives the warmish tone I mentioned in my previous
message and offcourse not metamerism.
I had problems about a year ago to get my printer use only black ink
but it has been solved long ago. I think that had to do with some
driver versions or somehow messing something. At least by removing
everything "2100" related from my computer (and I mean removing, not
just uninstalling) and re-installing drives did help, but that is a
too long story.

I checked the 2100 driver installed on my machine and it was v5.40.
I downloaded the latest driver from the Epson site and loaded that.
It displays as v5.50. It prints in black mode no differently. If I
scan prints made with the Epson driver and QTR side-by-side on a flat
bed scanner, the Epson driver print has a marked magenta cast as
compared to the QTR print, whereas the Epson print looks slightly
green when the prints are viewed in daylight.

Ah! As I recall, it matters which black ink you are using. I happen
to be using the photo black cartridge at the moment. I believe the
colour inks are not used when using black mode and matte black ink,
as is the case with the original poster.
