trouble with Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl

2004-12-24 by Pieris Berreitter

I loaded up a sheet of Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl today to see what
I've been missing as I've only printed on EEM so far. At first glance
the Ilford looks better: deeper blacks, mostly. I boosted the contrast
of the EEM print to try to match but the Dmax still does not compare
to the glossy finish of the Ilford paper.

But on close examination of the Ilford under light there are these
weird cellular patterns in discrete portions of the image. Does anyone
know where these weird patterns are coming from? It seems to be
localized to the denser areas. I'm using the appropriate "Neutral"
curves from Paul's website.

I have scanned portions of the image on both EEM and on Ilford to
compare. See:

Try UCpk-PJO instead of EEM. Much better.

RE: [Digital BW] trouble with Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl

2004-12-24 by Paul Roark

That looks like the paper being overloaded with ink. It's a major problem
with Ilford and, usually to a lesser extent, other glossy papers.

With the Epson driver, the media type setting is the way to control the ink
load. The Photo Quality Glossy Film or other paper type setting might help.
Some printers seem to overload the paper worse than others. The 2000P,
7500, and 1290, for example, seem to print with a higher load than the 1280.
I just received a 1280 silver, and I'm suspicious it's more like the 1290
than the older 1280 I had.

What printer and inkset are you using?

At any rate, try some different paper type settings and see if it is
controllable.

I'll play around with the paper settings today. It was late and I
forgot to specify details -- I'm running a 1280 with UT2 inks (Eboni
black). I was surprised to see this problem as I had heard good things
about the Ilford paper being one of the few glossy-type surfaces that
support Eboni black.

Update on Ilford Galerie Smooth:

I neglected to mention that I'm using Eboni ink (UT2) on a 1280.

Based on Paul's explanation that these weird patterns are evidence of
too much ink on the paper, I tried 11 combinations of paper type and
curves or sliders.

The only samples I have done so far that do not have artifacting
visible at a 10" viewing distance are Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper with
Eboni Neutral Curve, and PQIJP with sliders C-5,M+5,brt+15. But at
closer viewing distance the artifacts are still visible.

Has anyone managed to completely banish these artifacts from the
Ilford paper? Would I have better luck with Photo Black Ink?

If the answer is no to these questions I may have 20 sheets of Ilford
Pearl Smooth for sale :)

Pieris,

>Update on Ilford Galerie Smooth:

>I neglected to mention that I'm using Eboni ink (UT2) on a 1280.

As you know, judging from the curve you used, Eboni is incompatible with
glossy paper. One either has to install Photo black or use the curves that
are made for printing glossy papers with Eboni installed. They generate the
black with a combination of the C & M inks, cutting out the Eboni entirely.

The curves are designed to be used with "No Color Adjustment" checked in the
driver. With that setting, the sliders are not visible. I found the Photo
Quality Glossy Film worked for me.

I have a section in my UT2 Readme file that discusses printing glossy paper
when Eboni is installed. See http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT2-Readme.htm.
Of course, these printers do vary from sample to sample. Note also that I
made the curves and recommendations based on an older 1280. I just received
a "silver" model of the 1280, and I'm suspicious that it is laying down more
ink -- like the 1290 does. I have not tried UT2 in it yet.

I've been testing (with excellent results) Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl
with the C86 and UT EZW inks. I get best results by choosing "DURABrite
Photo Paper" as the medium (too much ink with plain "Photo paper"), gamma
1.8, Brightness +3.

Smooth, smooth. Some might want to knock the contrast down a bit. I use
the paper when I want a bit more punch to a print.

[Digital BW] Re: trouble with Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl

2004-12-26 by awahlster

One of the Ilford Pearl papers has a terribly short life span while
the other two are quite good can anyone tell me which is which. After
buying the wrong one you think I should know but it's all long gone
and so's the box it came in. Now looking at them I can't be sure which
is which.

I just know the one I bought the prints didn't last a year before they
were total green crap while a couple of other papers still look great.

Thanks

Mark W.

PS I will be using this paper with both UT-2 in a 890 and a i960 for
color with Canon ink.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: trouble with Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl

2004-12-26 by Michael Hung

There're two type of ilford papers. The classic and non-classic.

Classic type is swellable for dye ONLY with long life but not water-proof (pigment ink will not dry).

The other type (anything that doesn't say 'classic') is for pigment. You will get short life with dye on this paper.

Since UT2 is pigment and canon is dye. You should not use the same paper for both printers.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: trouble with Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl

2004-12-26 by Daniel Ridings

I just printed out some using Paul Roark's recommended starting points for
Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl. I'm using Eboni Black, not Photo Black.

The results are even better than my first tries that used +3 brightness. I
show prints to "outsiders", one on EEM and one on Ilford and they almost
without exception choose the Ilford print. I'm not saying it's better. EEM
is great.

I still get best results with DURABright Photo Paper. I don't have a
choice for "Glossy Photo Paper", only "Photo Paper". But things have been
translated to Swedish and something might have gotten lost.

Brightness +8 Contrast -10 (I tend to like a little more contrast. Paul's
starting point was -15).
