ANOTHER C86/EZ question, about refilling.

ANOTHER C86/EZ question, about refilling.

2005-01-04 by welchmatt

Just wanted to confirm that the CMY cartridges all do use the exact
same ink. I'm about to buy some bulk ink, and noticed that MIS has
separate bulk inks for the C, Y, and M positions. I'm guessing I can
just buy one of those, and put it in each of my three separate
refillable cartridges.

Also, if Paul reads this, could you provide a bit more info on how
you "prime" the cartidge. Am I to understand that you actually pull
the "gasket" out near the print head. (My problem is that I can't
picture how the cartridge works, even with the photos I've seen.)

My first runs with the throw-away cartridges were stunning. With how
fast this printer drinks the black ink, and how much I'm printing,
refillables are the only way to go.

Thanks.

"With how

I agree.

But I noticed that on my second black cart I used, the ink has lasted
MUCH longer.

I'm now wondering if my first cart was bad? (I'm talking the pre-
filled carts here.)

Bulk is the way to go, no doubt.

Black and Cyan in my case. But hey, I'm not complaining. I have 4 oz
bottles :)

I've been printing liberally since I got it set up before Christmas. I'm
not sure how many prints, but a lot. The black and cyan are down to the
top of the labels on the bottles (probably about a centimeter). The
magenta is being used, but not even half as much. I couldn't even tell if
the yellow was budging until recently. It's behind the magenta in the race
to the bottom of the bottle.

I take MIS seriously when they say it (the CFS system) should be used
every day. With my R800 I think twice before printing out. Not with the
C86. Even when I'm to the point of buying a new set of bottles, it's not
going to cost me more than two Epson black cartridges over here (Sweden).

I had exactly the same experience. I did 6 or 7 nozzle checks and the black prefilled cart
was empty.

"I did 6 or 7 nozzle checks and the black
prefilled cart

Do you mean "cleanings"? Because nozzel checks don't use much ink at
all. It's like printing a few words.

I did run about 8 cleaning cycles on that first cart. To no avail.

The best thing to do if you don't get a good nozzel check, is to let
it sit a while before trying again.

Air is the biggest problem. Not ink clogging.

Live and learn, I always say!

I appreciate the comments on the refilling. That's all kind of a
mystery to me. Can anyone confirm my suspicion that all the color
cartridge inks are in fact the same, and that I only have to buy one
pint to fill all three?

The EZ gray inks are all the same density. The chips for the carts are
unique to each "color" spot. For example, I have just one pint bottle each
of EZ-Warm and EZ-Neutral. However, I have a couple spare chips for each
spot. Although the re-setter (modified as shown on my web page, accessed
from http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm ) has worked perfectly on the
C86 chips, on other printers I've found the chips sometimes don't reset
correctly.

> ... could you provide a bit more info on how you "prime" the cartridge ...

I first fill the new, empty cart through the hole at the top of the
reservoir. I wait a while for the sponge to get soaked, and add enough ink
to almost fill the reservoir. After I've "corked" the hole securely (but
without pushing the stopper down so far I can't remove it), I turn the cart
almost completely upside down, so that the outlet (still sealed) is
accessible and pointing up. I tilt the cart just enough so that the ink in
the reservoir is still covering the connecting passage between the reservoir
and sponge-filled section. The connection is very close to the outlet. I
want ink there so that when I pull ink out of the outlet it does not pull
air through that passage.

I then use a syringe with a shortened bottom fill adapter on it, and I
puncture the seal over the cart outlet. I use a regular bottom fill adapter
with the snout shortened to 7 mm. (MIS also sells a modified bottom fill
adapter that it has put a small tube on, supposedly for these poppet carts.
I'm not sure you can puncture the seal with these, however.)

Once the seal is punctured, I push the bottom fill adapter into the outlet,
with the cart in the almost upside-down position, and pull a bit of ink out.
The hope is to pull the air bell out that is usually right at the outlet and
can require a lot of cleaning cycles to remove. So, when I first start to
pull on the syringe, I get air. Once the ink starts, I'm done, and
hopefully the cart will start with a perfect nozzle check right after
loading into the printer.

Please pardon the continuing stupid questions. Is this "puncturing
the seal" something obvious? Puncturing the seal sounds fairly
permanent and one-time for what are supposed to be refillable carts.
Does the seal get punctured anyway when the cart is put in the
printer?

Other than that, I think I understand everything. Off to order a set
of refill carts, bulk ink, and syringes now!

Thanks,
Matt

Yes, the cellophane "seal" gets punctured anyways.

So, one only needs to have 4 chipped carts and one bottle of ink to
fill all four "positions?

From what I understand, not quite. One warm or neutral bottle can be
used to fill the three "color" positions. You'll of course need a
photo or eboni black bottle to fill the black position.

On another note, I ordered the high-capacity black refill cart. Any
downside to that?

I think the high capacity black cart is the way to go.
I haven't heard anything negative about them. That's the one I'm
going to use.

Re: [Digital BW] ANOTHER C86/EZ question, about refilling.

2005-01-04 by scott_now_coming

I just ordered everything I need to re-fill carts now.

I went with PK warm and warm, since I like the Epson Premium Luster
and I'm planning on switching to Kirkland Glossy.

Now, I hope it gets here in 5 days like my last order!

If so I have a lot of ink coming my way:-)
Talking about syringe and needles, I didn't order them. Can I use
standard syringe and needle or do i need some special one?

The MIS syringes are just standard ones. I use 10 cc sizes mostly. The MIS
needles have dull ends and are not too thin, so that the ink flows through
them easily. So, I'm sure you can find equivalent hardware close to you.

The EZ gray inks are all the same density. The chips for the carts are
unique to each "color" spot. For example, I have just one pint bottle each
of EZ-Warm and EZ-Neutral. However, I have a couple spare chips for each
spot. Although the re-setter (modified as shown on my web page, accessed

correctly.

> ... could you provide a bit more info on how you "prime" the cartridge ...

Here's a picture of one:

This is where they list the carts by part #:
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/epsonempty.html#C84

Of course, there is no way to know for sure if the numbers all relate to the
new carts or some older ones. The fact that the re-fill instructions are
just for the new, good ones might be a clue.

Re: [Digital BW] ANOTHER C86/EZ question, about refilling.

2005-01-05 by Daniel Ridings

Could you do us a favor, Scott. Could you list your order so we can get a
good idea about all the little details that we might forget. I would
appreciate it.

Question: Can the resetter reset even used Epson chips? If we have a few
empties lying around, can we rob them of their chips and reuse them?

Re: [Digital BW] ANOTHER C86/EZ question, about refilling.

I bought a pint each of PK-W and Cyan-W (c,m,y is the same ink,
different chip).

A chip re-setter.

3- 30mm syringe
3- needle2
2 each- empty black (large version), cyan, magenta, and yellow re-
fillable clear cartridges.
1- bottom fill adapter to remove a bit of air from the bottom of cart
after filling it with ink.

I'm not sure about the question you asked about the Epson chips.

Ask Paul, I'm sure he'll know.

I hope this helps,

Scott

Re: [Digital BW] ANOTHER C86/EZ question, about refilling.

2005-01-05 by Roy Alcantara

I've been lurking and gathering all of the info that I can regarding
the MIS inks for the C86.

I'm probably going to go the same route, with respect to buying
virgin cartidges. I have a couple of questions...

Which needle did you get? (I didn't find the "needle2" on the site
http://www.inksupply.com/accessory.cfm)

How do people puncture the outlet of the virgin cartridges?
(consistent with Paul Roark's instructions on filling the
cartridges) Can the cartdridges just be inserted into the printer
and then removed?

I'll probably get a pint of the UT-QUADPT-K and EZWRMPT-C (ref
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/utez.html).

Well, I think thats it for now.

Thanks in advance

Roy
