Re: KirklandPro Glossy PROBLEMS

Re: KirklandPro Glossy PROBLEMS

2005-01-06 by claudej1@aol.com

I just printed about 1,400 sheets of this stuff in December, and yes, once in
a while I got some lines in it.

I had to print FAST, so I printed at 720 PPI with HS checked in the driver. I
had some sheets that did this and most didnt'. I believe this could be some
manufacturing defects. However, since this paper is 1/5 the price of most
glossy papers out there, I don't worry about throwing away a few sheets here and
there. Minor stuff.

Well, As the story continues our young hero discovers the problem with
the amazingly cheap and pretty KirkLand Photo paper is in fact THE
PAPER I know this is totally shocking but the evidence is over
wellming (is that a word??)

Anyway to stop being silly I tried the second package of paper
printing from one box after the other same scanned slide done this
morning and there is no doubt the light streak on my first prints have
to be due to a flaw in the paper.

Well now shall we see if out local Costco will reurn defective Photo
paper????

Hmmm this could be interesting..

The second box of paper is totally beautiful.

Glad you found the problem.

Please let us know what happens concerning returning the paper to
Costco.

does the paper seem to look and feel exacly the same? And are the boxes
exactly the same? Might be a diferent paper, never know with costco.
that is why we want to find out what it really is, before costco buys a
diferent paper for thier box.

So, you have the "Swiss" paper WITHOUT the Epson logo on the back of
the paper?

What about the box you returned?

Thanks,

And, from your other posts, I gather it's the same lot number and everything.

Here's a silly suggestion. I've seen things like this before. Usually having to do with one box or batch or pile of paper having a slightly higher moisture content than the other. High moisture contents (like we use to keep our epsons from clogging) are death on most papers. Softens the surface, and you get exactly the problems you're seeing. I bet if you dry the paper a bit (and yes, a blow dryer will work, if you do it sheet by sheet. You'll know when you've overdried) these problems will go away.

You might have a box that was at the top or bottom of the pile on the pallet in the cold, damp warehouse for long enough to build up some moisture content.

Or this theory might be totally off base.

Re: KirklandPro Glossy PROBLEMS

2005-01-07 by awahlster

Scott none of the paper has had any logo on the back.

the two boxes I bought yesterday were from the same lot number
(printed on the back of the box) One package has so far been fine
(made about 6 prints from it) the other at least the first 20 pieces
showed the problem faint line.

The second box while being on the same pallet (not knowing if it
arrived that way or not) Has a different lot number. This box
purchased as an exchange today has so far been perfect except the top
sheet had some little spots on it I didn't use it all others have been
perfect.

At this time I'm basically happy with the product I'm willing to
accept that there may be some quality issues but Costco has no problem
exchanging it so While it would be a problem if I was selling prints
on some schedual. But as I'm just doing this for fun.

I'm expecting my bulk ink to arrive by Monday.

I plan on filling carts, installing them in the printer, running a
few nozzel checks and the letting it sit for while I run to Costco to
buy some KG.

I report my opinion after I make a print or two.

I'm ver excited towards the prospects of this paper.

Re: KirklandPro Glossy PROBLEMS

Scot a suggestion if you buy more then one box try a few sheets pread
throughout the stack to see if there is any problem that way you
aren't trying to return something weeks after you bought it.

Also the young lady said she would tag a note on the return report as
to why it was being returned she said that Costco because they are
basically suppilers to businesses they really take product quality to
heart especially when it is theor house brand.

Re: KirklandPro Glossy PROBLEMS

That's a good idea.

Something else while we're on the subject of Kirkland.

I'm bothered my a lot of people saying that this paper is
manufactured by Ilford.

That just doesn't make sense to me.

From my understanding, Ilford doesn't sell any paper that even come
close to the quality of this paper. Ilford, to my knowledge, doesn't
sell an acid-free, buffered paper.

I think the best Ilford apaer are only good for about 20 yrs., max.

Last year a very talented professional photographer showed me a
beautiful color portrait on Ilford paper. He even admitted it would
only last about 10 yrs. It was printed on an Epson 1280.

If anyone knows for sure that Kirkland paper is made by Ilford, I'd
like to know.

I want to contact Ilford about having it made and in other sizes, too.
Also, I understand it's great for color work (although, I'm mainly
interested in B&W)

Scott

Re: KirklandPro Glossy PROBLEMS

Scott I'm only using it in color at this time I don't have my Epson
890 set up for MIS UT-2 inkset yet. I figured I would burn up the
factory ink on color stuff first get some back log printed and learn a
bit about all my new toys at the same time then tackle B&W

Mark W.

It has beautiful color in every way I can think of My next door
Nieghbor is a profesional printer for a school package lab and she was
very impressed when I showed her. She only does there high end optical
enlargement printing has for about 10 years now.
