QTR 2.1 on os X 10.3 problems with 2200

QTR 2.1 on os X 10.3 problems with 2200

2005-01-06 by ianjamesmiller

I recently downloaded and installed QTR 2.1d for the mac and I'm
having output problems. The installation was seamless - the proper
printer was added, etc, but the prints are (I think) wildly off color.
The cool curve produces a very blue print (almost like a cyanotype),
the sepia is close (but washed out), and the warm looks very washed
out. I also downloaded and installed the soft proofs avail from carl
schofield and the prints are not close to those colors.

I believe I am printing it correctly from photoshop - the print's
color space is gamma 2.2, I use the same space as the original, etc.

I am using epson's enhanced matte and the curves made for that paper.

My monitor is calibrated.

Anyone have any suggestions? I poked around a little to see if I
could find a faq or troubleshooting guide, but I have not found one...

Thanks so much!

When I was helping my friend with this, I found that in "print with
preview", you have to make sure that "same as source" is selected,
otherwise you may be printing with more than one profile.

Good luck.

Thanks - I do have "same as source" selected in the print preview
color management dialog.

Are most people's experience that it works 'right out of the box', or
does it take tinkering?

Hmm,

I am not a Mac user, so helping my friend was a learning experience
for me too. Our first print was also washed out. But then we did
two things (1) make sure "same as source" in print priew, and (2)
converted the grayscale file from 16 bits to 8 bits. I hope your
file is in grayscale and not your defalut color space (RGB)? Our
second print was perfect! Followed by many others using different
blends of CoolSe, Warm etc. By the way, the coolse print should not
be blue. If anything it should be slightly blue/magenta.

If this does not help, it may be out of my league. Sorry.

I'm assuming you have the Epson UltraChrome inks in the printer.
Are you using the profiles that start with "UC" -- they are the UltraChrome
profiles, the ones starting with "UT" or "UT7" are for the MIS UtraTone inks
which are very different. If you did end loading the UT profiles instead
of UC's they are in the download under Profiles/2200-UC.

Re: QTR 2.1 on os X 10.3 problems with 2200

In the end I believe that something got corrupted somewhere. Soon
thereafter I tried printing with the epson profiles and got completely
garbled output. I have since installed QTR on my ibook and the output
is quite good. To fix my desktop I had to strip off everything
(including gimp print) and reinstall the epson drivers.

Right now I seem to be able to print my B&W from my notebook and color
from my desktop. Not ideal, but I'll tinker with it some more and see
if I can figure out something consistant that is causing the
interference (or it just may be one of those things).

thanks for the replies, and I'll let folks know if I find something
consistent going on.
