Yes, I just loaded QTR 2.1.d last night on a W2K box for an Epson 4000 printer and and got a "Error writing to Printer" in the Raw Log. Could not print nothing and I tried all sorts of print settings ... I did first uninstall my old ver. 2.1.b which worked fine before. Roy or anyone i.e., any idea please let me know -- I'm real interested in getting the roll feed option working ... Thanks, SteveB --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "jonassandersson" <jonas.andersson.hemma@h...> wrote:

John, don't see it -- where is the batch files selection located? Yes I have. With my W2k/Eps2100 I can print with batch files, but not without batch files. I have asked about this two times here in this forum without getting any response. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhite ThePrint/message/53736 It would be very interesting to know if someone has used it with success and what it does to the prints. \\ Ulf --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "jonassandersson" <jonas.andersson.hemma@h...> wrote:

You can print without the batch files but it would be quite tedious to do for each print as you would have to type in a rather long command line which could possibly be longer than the command processor will allow from stdin. In short just use the batch file method, I can't think of why you wouldn't want to. Don Bryant --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ulfstr" <ust@h...> wrote: > > Yes I have. The reason you may not find a batch file setting is because it's not in the Ver 2.1d QTR download which has the 2.1.10 ver gui integrated... You need to load ver 2.1.11 off Stephen's site to get the batch mode setting. Sort of like a mystery novel... Happy to report that roll paper printing is working on the 4000 printer. So I don't have to make expensive print tests w/ 16 in. wide semi-matte does anyone know the custom paper setting to get as close to 16 in. width as possible...? Thanks in advance! Sorry butI don't understand what you mean. I can't get QTRgui to work without batch-files. I have read the help-files without finding anything. I have asked about this some times now and Stephen Billard does not answer at all. I don't know why? There must be an answer if there is something one can do, or not, to get the non batch to work. \\ Ulf -- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "donbga" <dstevenbryant@m...> wrote: > > You can print without the batch files but it would be quite tedious > to do for each print as you would have to type in a rather long > command line which could possibly be longer than the command > processor will allow from stdin. > > In short just use the batch file method, I can't think of why you > wouldn't want to. > > Don Bryant > > --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ulfstr" > <ust@h...> wrote: > > > > Yes I have. What OS are you using? Does your filename contains non-ISO-8859-1 characters? Do you see things spooled to the printer at all? You are using the .11 GUI, right? Michael --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ulfstr" <ust@h...> wrote:

From that I would infer from that is that the quadtoneprint.bat file is required since it is probably refered to directly by QTRGui.exe code. I've scanned the file and found no direct ASCII reference to that name so that would be my guess. Again why do you need it to work without using batch files? Don Bryant

But, then, QTRgui v2.1.10 only prints through batch files, that's why the option is not there. QTRgui version 2.1.11 has the option to print with or without batch files. So far I have heard of two cases of people using Windows 2000 that can't print except using batch files. I also believe that at least one person on Windows 2000 has reported that printing without batch files works just fine. I'd be curious about who is successful or not with the non-batch file printing. Also include information about your system configuration and printer. Maybe there will be a correlation. -Stephen www.sbillard.org/Stephen

I thought I had answered you. You keep posting the same question, though. I can't tell anything from the information you have given me other than you have "killed" the ImageToRaster program before it has completed. I don't know why it hasn't completed as it has not put anything into the log file. I have no Windows 2000 system to test on. I know this works on Windows XP and I believe that I have seen someone who said it worked on his Windows 2000 system. Unless enough people report working/not working with configuration information, I doubt I will be able to figure out what is different about your system. -Stephen www.sbillard.org/Stephen

The batch file is created on the fly and deleted once the printing has finishes. Its name is generated by the Windows GetTempFileName function so even I could not tell you what it is. The reason for wanting to print using Pipes (which is the alternative to Batch files) is that batch files do nasty things to extended ligatures and accented characters such as á, æ, ø, ö, ß, etc. Mostly, it changes them into something in the US ASCII subset. So, if you happen to use name a file with one of these characters, you can't print it using batch files. -Stephen www.sbillard.org/Stephen

That isn't the point. In either batch mode or named pipe mode, QTRgui sets up and passes all the parameters. You don't have to type anything. The difference is how the System runs the programs. In batch file mode, QTRgui creates a batch file and then the Windows Command window processes it. This leads to two potential problems. First, ligatures and accents are stripped from file names. I know that this won't mean anything to native English speakers, but our international colleagues find this a bit restrictive. Second, QTRgui can't tell what is happening on the run for each program. So, if you get a failure in the printing program the other two programs may not notice and just stay around in memory. Named pipes lets QTRgui pass parameters without any interference. It also lets it monitor the programs, report errors, and terminate programs as necessary if there are problems. You should not use the batch file method unless the named pipe method does not work for you. And then, you should report that named pipes don't work and describe you system configuration, etc. so that maybe we can find out why. In theory, the only difference between the two methods is how the programs are run, so if one works, both *should* work. If one doesn't work, we need to find out what the difference was. -Stephen www.sbillard.org/Stephen

Steve, I'm on w2k, dual Xeon CPU kernal. Pipe mode does not work, batch does. I'm not sure what info you would like to have? If I turn on debug, it stops executing when the terminal "rawprint" comes up, task manager goes to 100% idle, and nothing more ever happens. If I click away rawprint, the log error is QuadToPrinter "No pages found" If there is more information I can dig up, let us know. When I run batch mode, QuadToPrinter runs at 100% on one cpu for what seems like a very long time before the page actually begins spooling. This is printing the step-21.tiff file. John

I'd like a couple of things. First, from a command window, type SET>env.txt This will create a text file in the current directory named env.txt. Please send me that file. Second, run a print job in pipe mode. This will create a log file, QTRLog.txt. There will be three lines in the QTRgui part of the log. These are the command lines for executing the QTR printing. Delete everything from the log except for these three lines. Then place double quotation marks around the executable names on each line--i.e. "c:\program files\QuadToneRIP\bin\QuadToPrinter.exe" Then place a vertical bar "|" at the end of each of the first two lines with spaces before and after. Then delete the end of line character after each vertical bar and space. Now save this file as QTR.bat. It will be a batch file that should run your print job. Run the batch file and see if it will print. Let me know the results. -Stephen www.sbillard.org/Stephen

Steve, I sent the info directly to your email address. Let me know if you did not get it. I don't know if it's relevant, but the programs show up in task manager as .e, not .exe, for example quadtoprinter.e. John

Hello, I use a 1280 for BW with Ut2 inks. Great. Since I got my new minolta maxxum 7 digital, I have had the urge to make a few COLOR prints. Something I never do. Anyways, I see that the C86 is great for BW with mis ez's, and so it must be a pretty good printer. My question is, How is it for color? All I want is good color easily on ONE kind of paper. dont care what it is. I just dont want to get into a color chase like i did on my epson 1200. Can the 86 give me a simply good color print with the epson driver, on a mac running OSX, on some kind of epson paper? Thanks in advance!, Doug M
