Michael,

That is some very exciting news!

Is the "Vivid" setting any relation to the Vivid that shows up in the
Epson 1270 drive when you choose Custom>PhotoEnhance4? Is there
something similar in the 1280 driver? Or is the "Vivid" just an
option on the 7000?

a 6x loupe and the Epson driver they are both comparable. Since Epson
does not publish the droplet size of the 7000, I looked in the
Calgraph technicians service manual. It states that the heads are DX3
Drop on Demand 4 picoliter heads. I would have to believe this as the
1280 drop size is visually indistinguishable from the 7000.

Sorry about that, I guess we need to watch the subject line more closely.

I have two printers, a 1280 and a 7000. To tell you the truth, with a 6x loupe and the Epson driver they are both comparable. Since Epson does not publish the droplet size of the 7000, I looked in the Calgraph technicians service manual. It states that the heads are DX3 Drop on Demand 4 picoliter heads. I would have to believe this as the 1280 drop size is visually indistinguishable from the 7000.

I will tell you that with Paul Roarks curves and the Variable Tone inks using the Epson Driver and the Custom controls set at "Vivid" and not Automatic, I am getting dotless prints.

Mike,

Found it on the 1270 driver. I've used this thing for a year and
never noticed that one.

With the CIS for the 1270/1280/1290 series available and the new inks
from MIS this is looking really appealing.

Thanks,

Martin Wesley

Please remember that you need the Roark Curves for the 1280. You can download them from the MIS SIte.

Good Luck

RE: [Digital BW] Re:Epson 7000 droplet size -- Variable-tone setup

2001-08-10 by Paul Roark

I found that the "vivid" setting worked best for the 3000 also. It may not
be the best for other printers.

In general, I've written the curves for the "automatic" setting on the
smaller desktop units. Curves that were balanced for that setting will not
produce good grayscale ramps with the "vivid" setting.

I can't tell from the Epson materials exactly what these setting do. I
originally thought that "automatic" would be best because the Epson
materials I found indicated that "automatic" gave the best control or most
accurate translation of the file to the print. As a practical matter,
however, I can't really see any difference in terms of ability to control
the printer with the Photoshop curves. So, the other differences -- even a
dither difference, apparently -- seems to be the main differences for at
least the larger printers.

I've also notice that on some printers the curves needed to control the
inkset are less "radical" with one setting or the other. In general, the
less radical, straighter curves are less likely to result in unwanted
artifacts. With the 3000, for example, a very steep slope seems to cause
more dots than does darker ink in the light tones. Getting these nice, mild
slopes is one reason I prefer the 6-ink printers. The curves needed to
control the inkset are relatively straight, and this seems to result in
fewer humps in the ramp and other undesirable printer artifacts.
