plug for QTR and Kokopelli glossy...& a question

plug for QTR and Kokopelli glossy...& a question

2005-01-22 by Djon

QTRgui does a fabulous job (easy as pie, zero glitches) with inkjet
B&W (2200 and OEM pigments) but I've not figured out how to specify
image size on a print, or how to locate a print accurately on a page
(which we can do with some awkwardness using the Epson printer app).

For example, I'd like to make 6X9 on 8.5X11 and I CAN do that with the
Epson printer app, but I can't do that with QTR...which is near
perfect, for B&W. Grrrr.

Any ideas out there?

Plug: Moab Kokopelli and the standard Epson pigments produce VERY
attractive and subtle selenium-toned look, superb blacks, and an
excellent high gloss in B&W...

I wish color was as satisfactory gloss-wise... a report in the current
Photoshop User Magazine rates Kokopelli as the very best glossy paper
in all but one test image, but it still looks like glossy color's
further from perfect than is QTR B&W glossy.

I use Qimage to size pictures. It is designed for that purpose. If you
really must use QTRgui, the approach is to use the scale factor. Hold your
mouse over the image and the hint will tell you what size it is. You will
also be able to right click and set one of the two dimensions to a specific
size.

For placement, click and drag the image to about where you want it. The
margins numbers will show you where it is placed. Directly change the
margins for fine tuning.

QTR and Qimage and Kokopelli...& another question

2005-01-22 by Djon

Stephen, thanks.

I'm slowly wending my through Qimage..it's been a tough go because it
is obviously a committee design (see the Qimage Forum!), it serves
zillions of specific purposes but its front end is initially
intimidating.

I use Qimage increasingly, but I've still not figured out how to use
QTR with it for B&W. Got any tips? I suspect it'll be the perfect
solution if I can get past the initial learning curve. I LOVE its
Lancozs interpolation feature for big prints from 35mm.

Re: QTR and Qimage and Kokopelli...& another question

2005-01-23 by fredila2

Djon,

I've been using Qimage for quite a few years. I haven't used many
of its editing features as I do most of that in Photoshop.

But I do all of my cropping, some of my sharpening, and all of my
printing with Qimage.

I've just started to use QTR and like it. After cropping,
sharpening and sizing with Qimage, I "Print to File" in Qimage and
produce a TIF image (without a Printer ICC profile.) Even though
Qimage produces an RGB image, I understand that the latest QTR
converts it to grayscale.

I then open QTR and import the Qimage "print to file" image (you can
also have QTR "monitor" the folder that you use to store the
Qimage "print to file" image). I don't need to make any other image
adjustments other than select the desired set of curves. Then I
print.

Hope this helps.

Fred

2005-01-23 by Stephen Billard

I think a few people have commented on this. In a nut shell:

Set QTRgui to monitor a folder.

From Qimage, set your page size to be the printable area of the paper you
are using. I.e. allow for the required margins.

Do your normal page layout in Qimage.

Print to File placing the output in the folder QTRgui is monitoring.

For the Moab glossy paper are you using the IsmoothPearl profile or a
custom profile?

How's the bronzing?

Thanks in advance,
SteveB

Re: QTR and Kokopelli glossy...

Little bronzing, none under most light. If you work at it you can see it.

There is an etched-seeming effect on the surface, at the edges of deep
blacks, analogous almost to the famous "Rodinal Effect" ... that's
where bronzing can be seen if you hold the print at an angle under
certain (unusual) kinds of light. I can see it if I hold the print
close to an Ott light (neo daylight) at about 45deg. I've not found
other situations but they probably exist. No evidence of it under
tungsten, open soft daylight, harsh daylight, or warm fluorescent.
Might be a problem under spots, such as decor or certain exhibit
lighting.

I don't think glossy's ever been the ideal for photos under glass, so
if the print's supposed to be hung I'll use a matte.

Kokopelli is better-looking than Kodak's RC silver paper ever was,
even with the bronzing. Better blacks, better scale, better gloss.

Kokopelli isn't as satisfactory for color, but Photoshop User says
it's the best, fwiw. I'm using Moab Entrada Natural for color, a matte
paper without whiteners.

Djon, thanks much for the info. -- I'm going to try some...

I'm simply using the canned Epson glossy profile. Not perfect, but
very good tonally and quite attractive.
