BW with Epson 875

BW with Epson 875

2005-02-01 by mhjackson2001

I am interested in getting into black and white printing and I have
an epson 875DC printer that is "spare". Is this an easy unit to
convert to balck and white?
Also, I am not sure where to begin with getting inks/cartridges.
I have checked out the offerings on the MIS associates pages, but am
not sure what "system" to start with...
Should I get Quadtones or Ultratones? Variable mix or Full spectrum?
If I understand correctly, I can use UT2 inks designed for the 890.

As a follow up to this request, I would like input as to whether I am
better off to convert my spare Epson 875DC to BW using MIS inks and
cartridges or whether to get a c86 and work with that one...
Thanks in advance for any responses!

The 875 is a great BO machine. I've used it with MIS Full Spectrum inks, as well as Eboni
BO. I preferred the BO output. It is a very capable printer for any Quad application.

Quad prints will be much smoother (less dotty) when printed with the 875 than that of the
C86.

Thanks for the reply.
I am new to black and white and need some help with terminology/setup:

If I want to use the 875 as a black and white printer, am I best
advised to load it with blank inks as supplied by MIS? Is this what
you mean by BO?

I am not sure what the difference is between Quad and BO...
Can you suggest a starter set up to get me printing with the 875?
What cartridges and accessories should I get so as to refill my own
system?

BTW, is there a black and white printing FAQ out there?

Absolutely - BO is the easiest method to begin printing black and white. You could spend
more on printing packages, but many of us have found that BO gives the image a better
quality and tonal transitions, as well as a luminosity or glow that is not achievable when
using a quadtone system.

BO is Black Only printing - meaning that only the black cartridge is used when printing.
The best meduim for BO is currently MIS Eboni for matte papers. I've used the original
epson black ink for BO on glossy papers - and Epson black on KIrkland Glossy is a
beautiful combination. More information here:

Quad is any inkset that replaces the colored CMY inks with various shades of grey and
printed with the color settings (nstead of using just the black ink for neutral black and
white prints). Examples are the MIS Full Spectrum inksets, which can purchased at
