Print Margins, Print Sizes - QTR vs Epson 2100 driver

Print Margins, Print Sizes - QTR vs Epson 2100 driver

2005-02-02 by Steve Kale

I recently posted some observations re coating prints made with the Epson driver with
glop using QTR and an issue I came across re different image sizes.

Well it turns out that the Epson 2100 driver for Mac (UK version) is off - QTR is spot on
(tests done with A4 paper, image 3x5in, centred). If you print an image with the Epson
standard driver your print will be lopsided on the page. If you print using the Epson No
Margins driver your image will be very nearly perfectly centred (1mm off) BUT will be
bigger than it should be (3 1/8 x 5 1/8").

The only annoying thing about QTR is that it seems to prevent you from using the top and
bottom (portrait) 1.5cm of the page if A4 centred is selected.

The Epson driver for Mac in the UK really is a piece of crap. On top of the issues noted
above, it won't let you print black only when a Photo Black cartridge is installed - it uses
all the inks. I know the 2200 driver does not have the BO problem - what about the points
I note above?

The 2200 Epson prints perfectly centered images--without any excluded
top/bottom segments-- if the driver version called "Stylus Photo 2200
(Standard--Minimize Margins)" is used. This driver version is not to
be confused with the one used for borderless printing (that's called
"no margins" for the 2100?), which Epson calls "Stylus Photo 2200
(Sheet Feeder--Borderless)". Yes, the 2200 borderless option does
print with somewhat expanded image size--something Epson does in order
to help ensure that the print will actually be borderless. IMHO,
Epson goes too far in this regard (I print a 4x6" image scaled down to
3.85x5.775 in order to minimize the amount that the driver "trims" off
my image.

On a PC Epson 2100, I find that printing through the Epson driver with
a 3mm margin and "maximum printed area" gives me a fairly even margin,
within the limits of paper loading, but just recently I've had some
problems with QTR. I used to establish an image size of 202x289 in
Qimage, which would give me a 4mm margin on an A4 page, and then tell
QTRGui to centre this. But with a recent upgrade I'm getting a 5mm
margin at the top, and have had to remove the centre setting, specify
a 3.5mm top margin, and shorten the image size just a little. Has
anything changed in this regard in QTR(Gui) recently?

In relation to borderless, if you're on a PC Qimage now has an option
to turn off the overspray. On a 2100 this will work in some paper
settings, where overspray is achieved by the printer driver telling
the print software that the native print resolution is 757 rather than
720, but not where overspray is achieved by telling the printer
software that the paper size is larger than it actually is (4.9mm
larger in the case of the 2100).

Does it print the 4x6 a little big or does it stay 4x6 and trim the edge of
the image? I just had a long discussion with Epson UK Support. They simply
did not believe me, did not have a 2100 they could use to test and asked me
to send in the tests I had done. They were also unaware of the photo black
Black Only issue - printing with all colours.

I gess I will check out the "maximum" option for the 2100. (There are
Standard, Maximum and No Margins.) Maybe that is the equivalent of
"minimize margins".

Thanks - using "maximum" is much better. Image size is right and it is
centred (+/- 1mm)
