Epson Premium Semi-Matte

Epson Premium Semi-Matte

2005-02-07 by David Wroblewski

I'm curious about the Epson Premium Semi-Matte paper that
Paul favors. I see it comes in rolls--and that's it. (I've
seen the premium semi-gloss.) I use a 2200, so none of the
current roll sizes are going to work for it, and in any
case I'd like to check it out first.

(a) Does anyone know a vendor who'll provide a sample
cut from a roll?

(b) Any info on whether it will be coming out in
sheet format?

(c) Is it practical to cut rolls into sheets by hand,
or does the curl interfere?

Thanks,
David

Why can't you get someone to cut a large roll into smaller sections?

If you want a sample why not approach Epson marketing direct

Good idea--I suppose they must have samples. Thanks for the
suggestion. I tend to write off marketing depts for some reason,
so I hadn't considered this.

I've never tried to get samples directly from Epson. I would think they would not supply them. A better bet would be to get some samples from a supplier. Since this is roll only media, you may have to get it from a 'professional' supplier.

Try Exim-Vaios. They custom cut various roll papers down from larger
sizes to fit smaller printers like the 2200. I haven't usedthem, but
hear they will often cut rolls that aren't yet listed on their site.
You may need to call them to discuss your needs.

I don't, but if you're looking for someone to cut down a roll you might
inquire of Exim Vaios. They don't list premium semimatte in their
custom-cutting section right now, but if enough users ask for it perhaps
they'll add it.

http://www.eximvaios.com/catalog/default.php

One warning: if it's like the Epson Ultrasmooth that they cut down, it
will come on a roll with a core size larger than the 2200 will handle,
so you'll need to hand cut from their size, or make your own mounting
brackets (possibly wall-attached).

> (b) Any info on whether it will be coming out in
> sheet format?

Epson doesn't say anything about a sheet format on their site.

Of course, for a long time the site claimed they would produce
Ultrasmooth in sheet form, and their sales department claimed it would
be out in December. Now the site still says it's available in sheets,
but doesn't list any sheet sizes as available (nor as forthcoming).
>
> (c) Is it practical to cut rolls into sheets by hand,

With the Ultrasmooth I could cut it, but then it still had a strong
curl. I had to reverse curl it overnight, then I could flatten it under
weights.

I don't know whether that would be needed for semimatte.

Thanks to everyone for the pointers to Exim Vaios. Just
the sort of place I was wondering about.

What was your technique for reverse-curling?

I just rolled the cut sheets the other direction by hand, to about the
same roll inner diameter as they had originally, and used rubber bands
to hold them that way overnight. (Yes, this isn't very archival, but it
was just overnight. I might improve that technique using heavy cotton
thread, I suppose).

I wouldn't recommend this procedure for EPSM. This paper is relatively
thin and requires care in handling or it will kink very easily.

Re: Epson Premium Semi-Matte

I just ordered a 44" x 100 ft roll of Epson Premium Semimatte, split into two 17 inch rolls
plus left over 9+ inch roll from Exim Vaios. They charge $5 per cut, so cost of a roll plus
$10 in this case.

Well folks it took a while (too long) but Epson has finally informed
us that
several new sizes of paper will be shipping in the next few days. They are
as follows:

Premium Luster Photo Paper (250) 17" x 22" (25 sheets)
Availability: February 11, 2005
Product code: S041828
MSRP: $89.95

Premium Semimatte Photo Paper (250) 17" x 22" (25 sheets)
Availability: February 11, 2005
Product code: S041827
MSRP: $89.95

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Epson Premium Semi-Matte

2005-02-07 by Carl Schofield

The 17x22 inch sheets are convenient, but I wonder if they increased
the basis weight for semimatte sheets as well to improve handling (the
250 gsm roll stuff kinks easily). Price per 17x22 inch sheet is also
quite a bit more than using it in rolls. Estimate about $3.50/sheet
pre-cut vs $1.85/sheet cut from roll (Based on cost of a 44 inch roll
cut into two 17 inch rolls).

If it's thin then (I presume) it probably doesn't need the
reverse-curling procedure that the Epson Ultrasmooth needs. Thanks for
the info, Carl. I have never seen EPSM.

It is not just that it is thin, it is also quite stiff and will curl,
but trying to reverse curl it would probably be difficult without
getting kinking problems.

Epson Premium Semi-Matte

2005-02-07 by AdventureCam Photo

David,

The Proof Line Semi-Matte DP is similar to the Epson Semi-Matte, and it's
available in sheet sizes. It works very well with the UC inks. Go to
http://www.adventurecamphoto.com/photopapers.htm for sizes and pricing. We
have a photo sample pack available that contains two sheets of five
different papers including the semi-matte.

A consolidated thanks to everyone who has contributed ideas and
information on this thread. Very helpful.

I'm presuming (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that feeding a
"curly" sheet cut from a roll into my 2200 is going to be an
exercise in frustration, so *not* decurling ain't an option.
Right?

Maybe the solution for a small-timer like me is to buy a
box of 11x17, even though it is costly compared to the roll.
(Doubly so, given the waste involved in using it on a
13x19 printer.) But at least I'll have that option in a few days.
