Roller and pizza wheel marks with MIS PK on a 2200

Roller and pizza wheel marks with MIS PK on a 2200

2005-02-07 by guy_staley

Is there a way to overcome this? I've looked at the MIS site, and tried the trick
of wedging the CD bar down, but this only seems to lift SOME of the wheels (4
out of 12: i.e. - the 4 immediately beneath the CD bar); unless there's
something I'm missing.

How do you go about lifting ALL of the wheels out of the way? And what about
the pizza wheels? I'm a little reluctant to start experimenting with disassebling
my brand new printer: I'm willing to do it, just not without some idea of what I'm
doing.

I'm printing images with a LOT of black, and as it stands, the printer is
unusable for these types of images, and (un)fortunately, that's kinda my style.
This is happening on both Ilford Smooth Pearl and Epson Semi-Gloss. I am
absolutely LOVING the look of the ilford: incredible Dmax! But if I can't
alleviate the track marks, it's all for not. I was becoming very encouraged, but
if I can't remove these marks, I'll have to go back to my fume room.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Guy Staley

You need to prop up all of the rubber roller wheels per the
instructions on the MIS site with cut off nylon ties. I have 7 ties
inserted above the 7 wheels from right to left and then 1 tie in the
last wheel to the left on the CD bar - this keeps that whole group
elevated. Also, raise the front pizza wheels by holding up the silver
bar with the pizza wheels with your right thumb and index finger and
then push down with your left little finger on the small white plastic
wheel at the left end of the row of pizza wheels until the white wheel
snaps down and locks up the silver bar with pizza wheels.

Carl, any idea how to reverse this once it's done? I snapped mine
down, and have had a paper feed problem printing a 10 inch image
on 8.5x11 EEM. I'd like to restore it to see if it makes a
difference. I can't figure out the trick.

Thanks,
David

The trick is to pop the little tab up in the hole immediately to the right of the
white roller.

I, too, couldn't figure out what was holding the wheel down. As it turns out, it
has nothing to do with the wheel: there is a number of tabs that poke through
the holes along the length of the aluminum piece which hold the pizza wheels
in place. If you look to the immediate right of the white roller, you'll notice that
particular tab is pushed through the whole and out of place. It's a little hard to
describe, but if you look, you'll probably see what I'm talking about.

In order to get the tab popped back up through the whole and latched as it
should be, I had to use the thin metal tip of a mechanical pencil. You need to
get behind the tab and pull it clear so that it can pop back up through the hole. I
know I'm not explaining this very well, but...

At any rate, once you pop the tab back through the whole, you should be able
to latch it again. I suggest that people NOT do this mod, as it actually torques
the pizza wheel assembly a little bit, not to mention that it actually forces the
last 2 or 3 wheels (closet to the white roller) down. So although it lifts the
majority of the pizza wheels out of the way, it doesn't lift them all out of the way.

There's an easier way to accomplish the same thing which allows itself to be
undone more easily: simply prop the aluminum bar up by putting something of
the appropriate size under the edge of the bar next to the white roller. I used a
small piece of rubber pencil eraser cut to an appropriate thickness. Works like
a charm, and is easy to remove! Now I have pizza wheel free prints, and such
a simple solution.

Cheers!
-Guy

Yes, I think I see. You don't mean the small square hole
*immediately* to the right of the roller, you're talking about
the tabs that occur alongside individual pizza wheels, correct?

In other words, some of the pizza-wheel cut-outs in the metal
strip are regular plus-sign shapes. Others have a little extra
metal punched out in the bottom right side, and those are the
one's with the tabs.

Thanks, Guy. Worked like a charm.

Actually, I DO mean the small square hole "immediately" to the right of the
roller. But I also mean the tabs that occur alongside individual pizza wheels:
those are the tabs to which I refer. However, the small square one next to the
roller is the one thats holding the roller down. Pop that tab back through and
latch it up and your back to where you started. Then simply prop up the metal
strip by that same amount by placing something of the appropriate height under
the metal strip immediately to the left of the roller. Voila!

Got it--after some jockeying of the metal strip and the wheel
assembly beneat. I had to get both the square-hole tab
and the rightmost pizza wheel tab popped through at the
same time before it worked.

Thanks for the advice.
