Hi all!!

Hi all!!

2005-02-17 by K.A.H.

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Anyone out there have any experience with
the Lyson Daylight Darkroom system? I've had the chance to play
around with it a little, (Epson 2200 w/the DD software), and I'm very
impressed. It's truly a very viable, workable solution to producing
neutral B&W's. Anyone else??

Does the metamerism bother you in the LDD prints? I have a sample
print that looked a little greenish in daylight, but relatively neutral
under tungsten. I guess the new DD inkset eliminated the strong
magenta metamerism under tungsten that you will get using just the
Lyson Quad Blacks.

I saw sample prints at the Camera Store I frequent, and thought the print
quality was fine, Lyson Daylight Darkroom uses the Bowhaus RIP. But I did
not like the inks... I found them greenish under some light, they
metamerisized too much for my tastes as I walked to different light sources
with the samples.

There you go, if they can't solve this metamerism their invention is going nowhere.

I really wish someone could develop a paper that looked like this for our carbon pigment
inks. Then we would have something. All Lyson's mono dye inks have significant
metamerism, I used them for years. But their Cave Paint color pigments are apparently
very nice indeed. I want to test those soon.

I have used the Lyson Quad Black ink set, but I gave up on them. The metamerism
bothered me, and it always felt like I was fighting to get good prints from the canned ICC
profiles. I've switched to MIS and I'm not looking back.

When I heard about the Daylight Darkroom system, I requested a sample print, and the
moment I saw it I knew I'd made the right choice. The print quality is much better than I
had ever gotten (obviously), but the metamerism is still there.

I'll accept that their new DD system probably makes up for many of the shortcomings of
the Quad Black and ICC profile system, and I'll even admit that if I went back to them and
applied what I've learned about printing from using MIS inks, I'd probably get better
results, but I'm already much happier with MIS inks than I ever was with Lyson, even
though I've only been using them for a short time.
