Paper supplier in easy reach of Washington DC metro?

Paper supplier in easy reach of Washington DC metro?

2005-02-23 by colingruk

Hi,

I am visiting Washington DC at the beginning of April and may like to
try some papers that are unavailable on my side of the pond. It is
difficult finding vendors who will deliver to hotels. Can anyone
suggest where I might try?

I have only limited time but can travel by Metro/Bus. I will be
staying near the Metro Center.

Cheers,

Colin

Colin,

I don't want to be too pessimistic, but I have not found DC to be a
mecca for out-of-the-mainstream papers. Once place to start is the
Penn Camera outlet on E Street, NW, between 9th and 10th -- it is very
close to Metro Center.

While an old-time looking shop, they are staying (somewhat) with the
times and should have a selection of the usual suspects (I primarily
deal at their surburban Maryland store). You might stop in and ask
the staff (hopefully a younger person) about altrnative outlets.

Otherwise, I'd suggest of the usual internet suppliers and see if
*they* would deliver to your hotel...

Try Diana York at Hawk Mountain Art Papers. They are in Penna.

She sent some paper to me at the hotel when I was on temporary assignment at
the Pentagon.

I agree with Steve Alred that Penn Camera (penncamera.com) on E St,
between 8th and 9th NW, just a couple of blocks from Metro Center,
is the best local source. Take a look at their website to get an
idea of what they have. Not everything is stocked in the store, but
they can get it pretty quickly. Unfortunately, they don't seem to
have a lot of the papers and inks that are popular with this group.
I don't know of another local source that carries anything beyond
the Epson papers, especially, one that you can get to on the Metro.

You really have to look at the internet vendors. I use Inkjet Art
and Inkjetgoodies, both of which are in Utah. InkjetArt doesn't
charge for shipping on orders of at least $85. It takes 5 business
days to ship via UPS (United Parcel Service and they are reliable.
While I don't know if they will ship to a hotel, I've spoken with
each firm and found them to be reasonable to deal with. There is a
small company in New Jersey called Shades of Paper
(shadesofpaper.com) run by Jim Doyle. I've not dealt with him, but
his customers find him accomodating.

I've deal a lot with InkJetArt and with DigitalArtSupplies, and, more
recently, with ShadesOfPaper. Lots of integrity with all three. I'd
expect honest answers, genuine product, appropriate response when things go
wrong (which, sometimes, they will!).

Stephen, Seth, Andrew and Arthur,

Thank you for your responses. I will check out the on-line stores
and will visit Penn Camera, with whom I have been spending my money
for just over 20 years when living in and visiting DC, but last time
I visited their paper stock was not exciting. I bought a pack of
Museo but it was not to my liking.

Thanks for all your helpful responses.

Colin

This is for Vic,

Thank you for your email and generous offer. My emails to you have
bounced back as undeliverable. They were to thank you for your
generous offer of assistance. I am still researching options.
