Gretag-McBeth Eye One Design?

Gretag-McBeth Eye One Design?

2005-03-11 by Jack Winberg

I just received an intriguing message from MIS, indicating the availability
of an apparently new Gretag-McBeth Eye One Design outfit, complete with
software and spectrophotomenter, for $895. It claims the ability to
profile CRT and LCD monitors, and both RGB and CMYK printers, using their
so called "small chart" method.

I wonder if any of the color management wise hands on this list have any
experience with or impression of this equipment, and the likely accuracy of
the profiles generated with it. It SEEMS on the surface like a new, lower
priced entry into the spectro profile world.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jack.

I'm not familiar with that particular software bundle. I have the
Eye One Pro package with ProfileMaker 5. It does a fine job on both
CRTs and LCDs, and also with RGB and CMYK profiles (inkjet, printing
press, etc).

My guess is that the new package probably has fewer features than
PM5, but will give outstanding results as long as you are happy with
their presets. I know the Eye One Match software does a nice job,
but lacks some of the higher end options available in PM5. Most
users won't miss most of these features.

With all the competition and new products, the price of good
spectro/profiling packages are starting to drop. Not sure that is
much help. If it will do CRT, LCD, RGB and CMYK profiles, that
sounds like a good deal.

Why don't you post this question on the Adobe Color Management
forum? You might get some good feedback.

Lou

It is new and fully described here:

The Eye-One photo can do both Easy profiling and the more advanced
profiling. I have the Eye One Photo but have not used the Easy approach -
the test chart is about 1/8th the size of the full test chart.
