Re: Glossy prints--paper information

2005-03-11 by Diane Fields

I'd love to see other people add to the paper info in the groups' file. I think this would be very helpful. When one wants to get others' impressions of various papers, it takes a LOT of searching in these forums to find it. Of course, impressions are just that, but I would still like to get some feelings about certain papers rather than buying a lot of paper for sampling. I did that in the past for my 1280--and similar for the 2200, but there are other papers that some have mentioned here that interest me somewhat now that I'm not familiar with. I'm sure there are other papers also that would tempt me to try.

I'd also like to see people 'classify' the papers similar to what Steve is referring to in this post.

My point was that, if I am not mistaken, in the original post the author
showed people the same print on matte paper and then on "glossy". I am not
certain that the author meant glossy in the sense of a hi-gloss paper (ie a
subset of inkjet RC or PK-ink papers) or simply the broader group of
RC/PK-ink inkjet papers - I suspect the latter. I don't like high gloss
either - but a semi-matte print has quite a different finish.

I think a good starting place would be a clear
definition of terms. Someone earlier in this thread
described Epson Premium Luster as a semi-matte paper
when to my eye it is a glossy paper (If I see my
reflection in the print it isn't matte!). Add constant
use of cryptic initials and the marketing speak that
the paper companies add and it is totally unclear what
anyone is taking about.

Diane-

I understand it would give you a starting point, but would it? What works
for Paul may not work for Steve. What I am saying is it may not eliminate a
paper you find attrocious; nor, one that you find and love.

My suggestion is to get sample packs. Red River, Hawk Mountain, and several
others have packs for $15-20 or less. Actually, I have bought two or three
of each just to get an adequate number of samples to test in B&W and color
without investing.

I agree but this is a tangent from the original question - and has been
retitled as such - I still don't think we are kidding ourselves in printing
to papers loosely described as "resin coated inkjet papers" or RC paper for
short.

I agree -- to me the term "semi-matte" does not convey the notion of
what I perceive in (the surface of) Epson Premium Luster paper.
However, if you can actually see your face reflected in a Premium
Luster print, I'd say you have a very unusual sample--at least quite
different than my stash of that paper. In any case Premium Luster is
quite a bit more reflective than Premium Semi-Gloss, which to my eye
does have an appearance thst fits the designation of "semi-matte".

I agree. Also, your referral to "cryptic initials" does confuse the issue. I am sitting here right now trying to figure out what Epson DWM is--I'm sure I'll come up with it shortly LOL--as I'm familiar with most all the Epson papers, but for now--its going right over my head.

Seth, I have had all the sample packs in the past--some of the papers referred to do not come in those packs. I have or have had Hawk Mt., various packs from Inkjetart, Red River, and Digital Art Suplies, but would like to hear more about some of these less known papers like the Innova papers referred to this morning. I was unaware of their 'similarity' to the Hahnemuhle papers (which I use) and am going to order the sample pack from shadesofpaper.com for that one. Oh, also the link for the Innova was wrong----its http://www.innovaart.com/
