UT Inks - long term color stability question

UT Inks - long term color stability question

2005-03-12 by Phil Morse

I have had an 1160 CIS with UT inks idle for about one year. I just
started using it again and stepwedges show a noticeable midtone green
cast. Otherwise all else is amazingly good. I am using same test
stepwedge files as previously and I think the same workflow. Except
for the cast the wedges and a couple of prints look great.

Is there a possibility that the inks have changed color in some way?

PS: Before anyone asks, I print a nozzle check weekly, shake the
bottles monthly, and the printer sits on a cabinet with another
heavily used 1160 which keeps it moving regularly. The curved wedges
were a set I used back when my output was very neutral.

If it is a year old, you have the old magenta that was a problem. Whether
it's settling or sticking to the tubes of the CIS, I can't say. It might be
that when the toner tube (Y) is flushed out the color will return to normal,
assuming the bottle is well agitated. That is what happened with my 7500
when I was using the old UT1 in it. The first print after sitting a long
time was half green and then abruptly went back to neutral. The new UT1 has
the new toner mix that uses a new blue pigment instead of the magenta. It
does not seem to settle or fade nearly as much as the old magenta.

Thank you yet one more time, Paul.........

I can live with it for a while, I guess. I am waiting to hear what gives
with the new cartridges for the 1160. Possibly I should just invest in a
set of the new inks and rebuild my homemade CIS or start refilling when
they are available. I do really like the results I got previously with
your cool curves.

It sounded like you had plenty of the inks. You might just use some copy
paper and print a solid "yellow" color to blow out the green-shifted ink.
With my 7500 I change one position ink frequently and just print about 9
feet of butcher paper of that color. It cleans out the line without wasting
the other ink, and it doesn't take that long.

With you setup there may also be something going on in the sponge of the
CIS. That is a reservoir of ink that I don't have to worry about with the
7500.

When you get the new UT1, you probably will not be able to tell the
difference in the toner. It's a close match and compatible with the old.
