I suspect they know how to make them; it is just not economic to do so. Just 
as it may not be economic to make film for much longer. ;)

Sony and Nikon have just demonstrated that you can make high-quality sensors 
smaller - with the D2X. Who knows where the limit will be? In any case, they 
are already smaller than the 'sensors' in film, aren't they?
