MIS CFS & Pump Pointers

MIS CFS & Pump Pointers

2001-11-26 by Chris Hargens

I recently purchased a MIS CFS with vacuum pump. To be honest, I'm a
bit nervous about installing the unit -- afraid I'll perform some
step incorrectly. What makes the setup a bit more complicated is the
fact that the vacuum pump instructions are not incorporated into the
general installation instructions. At any rate, I'd be interested in
getting any pointer or warnings regarding installation.

Chris,
There's a lot of info on the vacuum pump on the MIS website --
www.missupply.com -- which is probably the best place to start.

I just installed a CFS on my Epson 1160, and the hardest part was
arranging the tubes so they didn't foul the print head. The rest is
pretty straightforward, easier than the directions make it sound. The
tubes will fill up much, much faster if you trim them so there's no
loop between the bottles and the printer, i.e., so the tubes lead
directly from the caps up and over the printer case; excess tubing
here can cause an airlock, especially if it loops up, above the height
of the print head so the printer can't pull the ink through. Yeah, I
found this out the hard way, since the manual that came with my CIS
didn't mention it (there are updated directions on the MIS website, too).

Otherwise, just go for it. Wear gloves and work slowly -- watch out
for the syringes -- it takes just the slightest pressure to squirt ink
all over the place when you purge the air.

Good luck,

Mike Smith

Thanks for the advice. I'm installing on an 1160, too. It looks like
one could also stumble by cutting the tubes too short. I'll measure
carefully before cutting. I was also a bit confused about the initial
nozzle check step that's carried out before one installs the CFS. I
guess the instructions assume that this step will be carried out with
the pre-CFS cartridges.
